The men's hammer throw at the World Athletics Championships in 1987 was held on August 31 and September 1, 1987 in the Olympic Stadium in the Italian capital, Rome .

The hammer throwers from the Soviet Union recorded a double victory in this competition. World champion was the defending champion, Olympic runner-up in 1980 , and two-time EM medalist ( 1986 silver / 1982 bronze) Sergei Litvinow . Second place in the occupied WM -Third of 1983 Jüri Tamm . Bronze went to the GDR pitcher Ralf Haber .

Record improvement

World champion Sergei Litvinow from the Soviet Union improved his own World Cup record in the final on September 1st by eight inches to 83.06 m.

qualification

August 31, 1987

26 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 76.50 m. Eight athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the four next-placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 75.18 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
