Jüri Tamm
Jüri Tamm (born February 5, 1957 in Pärnu , Estonian SSR ) is a former Estonian hammer thrower and current politician . During the time of the Soviet occupation of his homeland, he competed internationally for the Soviet Union .
Tamm won the bronze medals at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow and 1988 in Seoul . At the 1987 World Championships in Rome , he won the silver medal. For the now independent Estonia , he appeared again at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and came in 5th there.
Tamm briefly held the hammer throw world record in 1980 with 80.46 m , but was surpassed by his competitor Jurij Sedych on the same day . He set his personal best in 1984 in Banská Bystrica with 84.40 m. He had a competition weight of 110 kg with a height of 1.90 m.
After his sporting career, he went into politics in 1998 and was elected to the Estonian Parliament as a member of the Social Democratic Party in 1999 and 2003.
