The men's hammer throw at the World Athletics Championships in 1991 was held on August 24 and 25, 1991 in the Olympic Stadium in the Japanese capital, Tokyo .
The Soviet hammer throwers achieved a double success in this competition. With Jurij Sjedych , one of the most successful hammer throwers in sports history became world champion. He was two-time Olympic champion ( 1976 / 1980 ), Olympic silver medalist from 1988 , three-time European champion ( 1978 / 1982 / 1986 ), vice world champion in 1983 and holder of the world record. Now he had also won the last great title that was still missing. The reigning European champion Ihar Astapkowitsch took second place . The German Heinz Weis won the bronze medal.

qualification

27 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 75.50 m. Four athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the eight athletes placed next to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 73.24 m was enough for the final.
