The Soviet hammer throwers achieved a double success in this competition. With Jurij Sjedych , one of the most successful hammer throwers in sports history became world champion. He was two-time Olympic champion ( 1976 / 1980 ), Olympic silver medalist from 1988 , three-time European champion ( 1978 / 1982 / 1986 ), vice world champion in 1983 and holder of the world record. Now he had also won the last great title that was still missing. The reigning European champion Ihar Astapkowitsch took second place . The German Heinz Weis won the bronze medal.
