The preliminary round was carried out in three runs. The first four athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the three fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the quarter-finals. The three athletes who obtained the right to participate in the finals over their time were all recruited from the last preliminary run, which at the top was not the fastest of the three preliminary races, but in which the gaps behind the four directly qualified participants were significantly narrower than in the two races before.
