The IV. African Games , by 2012 Africa Games called (French .: IV e Jeux africains , Eng .: 4th All-Africa Games ) found from 1 August to 12 August 1987 in Nairobi , capital of Kenya , instead .
After the III. The 1978 African Games in Algiers had actually been planned to hold the next African Games four years later, in 1981. However, due to economic problems and political unrest, this did not succeed in 1981. Also in 1982 the Games could not take place due to major economic difficulties in the host country Kenya. China provided the financial means to build the Kasarani Stadium , but it could not be completed in time. So it was decided to have the fourth African Games in Tunis / Tunisia and the fifth in Nairobi. But even this plan could not be realized, so the games were postponed to 1986. Finally, due to Kenyan problems, the games had to be postponed again to August 1987.
On August 1, 1987, President Daniel Arap Moi officially opened the Games in the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi. About 3,000 athletes from 42 African countries took part in the sports competitions. As in previous years, athletes from South Africa were excluded from the games due to the ongoing apartheid in the country. There were competitions in 14 sports with 164 decisions. For the first time competitions in the fields of field hockey and weightlifting were held at the African Games. The teams from Egypt, Tunisia, Nigeria, Kenya and Algeria won the most gold medals.
