Patrick Sang (born April 11, 1964 in Kapsisiywa , Nandi County ) is a Kenyan track and field coach and former 3000 meter obstacle and long distance runner.

Life

Sang studied urban planning at the University of Texas at Austin from 1983 to 1986 , where he played for the Texas Longhorns university team in the NCAA .

Sang won silver medals in the 3,000-meter obstacle course from 1991 to 1993 in three consecutive years at major international events (World Championships 1991, Summer Olympics 1992 and World Championships 1993). He also won gold medals in his specialty at the Pan-African Games in Nairobi in 1987 and at the 1989 Summer Universiade in Duisburg. From 1999 he competed in road races for two years . In the half marathon he reached his best time in 1999 at the CPC Loop Den Haag and also won the Greifensee run in Uster that same year . He achieved his best result on the marathon distance with a ninth place in the Amsterdam Marathon .

Towards the end of his active career, he began to work as a trainer in 1997 and led his compatriot Bernard Barmasai to the world record in the obstacle course of 7: 55.72 minutes. In the same race at the ASV-Sportfest in Cologne, Sang achieved his personal best of 8: 03.41 minutes. From 2000 he worked for five years as a trainer for medium and long distance running at an IAAF training center in Nairobi. His most famous protégé is the marathon world record holder Eliud Kipchoge . In addition, he trained the multiple cross-country and half-marathon world champion Geoffrey Kipsang Kamworor , the marathon runner Emmanuel Kipchirchir Mutai and the Olympic marathon winner Stephen Kiprotich from Uganda.
