Yomi Bankole

Yomi Bankole (born January 7, 1960 , † January 29, 2012 in Lagos ) was a Nigerian table tennis player with an international career in the 1980s and 1990s. He won several medals at African continental tournaments, and he also took part in three world championships and the two Olympic Games .

Career

At the African Championships in 1985 Yomi Bankole was second in the individual and winner with the Nigerian team. In 1988 he reached the semi-finals in singles, in doubles he came second with Fatai Adeyemo . In 1987 he joined the African Games . Here he won gold with the team, in the individual he reached the final. He was nominated for world championships three times, namely in 1983 , 1985 and 1989 , but never came close to medal ranks.

In 1988 and 1992 , Yomi Bankole qualified for participation in the Olympic Games. In 1988 he won three individual group matches, namely against Zsolt Harczi (Hungary), Alain Choo-choy (Mauritius) and Abdul Wahab Ali (Iraq). However, since he had to accept four defeats, he did not reach the main round. In the doubles competition he managed with his partner Fatai Adeyemo in the group games with six defeats only one victory against the Brazilians Carlos Kawai / Cláudio Kano , which missed the main round. Also in 1992 he failed in the individual group games, where he lost two games and only prevailed against Raed Hamdan . In doubles with Segun Toriola , he defeated the Cubans Rubén Arado / Santiago Roque . Because of two defeats against an English and a Chinese doubles, the group games ended.

After 1992, Yomi Bankole no longer appeared in major international competitions.

In 2004 he was sentenced to four years in prison for armed robbery. After his release, he continued to play table tennis before he died in 2012 after a brief illness.
