Segun Toriola (born September 18, 1974 in Ilorin ) is a Nigerian table tennis player . To date (April 2018) he has participated in seven Olympic Games and 19 world championships .

Career

Segun Toriola still has eight brothers, he is the youngest. Guided by his father and a brother who also play table tennis, he started playing table tennis at the age of five.

Segun Toriola was the most successful table tennis player in Africa for many years. From 1995 to 2007 he won all four singles and doubles competitions at the African Games , a tournament that is played every four years. There are also two mixed titles and four wins with the Nigerian team. At the Commonwealth Games he won singles in 2002 and doubles in 2006 with Monday Merotohun.

From 1991 to 2015 he was nominated 17 times for world championships . Here, however, he never came close to medal ranks. He qualified six times to take part in the Olympic Games , the first time in 1992 in Barcelona and most recently in 2012 in London. Here, too, he always left early. Notable successes in 2008 were his victories against Jean-Michel Saive (Belgium) and João Monteiro (Portugal). Even with the 2016 Olympic Games , he is allowed to start. This makes him the only athlete from Africa to date (2016) who has been represented at the Olympics seven times.

Currently (2016) Segun Toriola plays with the French club Argentan Bayard in the second division. His best world ranking position is 56th in December 2008.
