João Monteiro (* 29. August 1983 in Guarda ) is a Portuguese table tennis - national team . He was European champion in 2014 as a team, in 2015 in doubles with Stefan Fegerl and in 2016 in mixed with his wife Daniela Dodean . In 2019 he won bronze medal in doubles with Tiago Apolónia .

Career

In 2000 Monteiro took part in a world championship for the first time and came with the team in 59th place. At the 2001 World Cup , he also played in the individual competitions, from 2002 on the Pro Tour . The first medal placement he reached there in 2005 at the Chile Open, when he reached the semi-finals in doubles with the South Korean Cho Eon-rae . He won the Brazilian Open 2006 together with Tiago Apolónia , and in the singles he reached the semi-finals at the Chile Open 2006. In 2007 he became the first Portuguese to make it into the top 100 of the world rankings , from which he has only been dropped for one month in November 2007. The following year, Monteiro qualified for participation in the Olympic Games , but was eliminated there in the first round against the Nigerian Segun Toriola . After continuous improvements, the Portuguese team reached 27th place at the 2008 World Cup and was therefore able to start in the Championship Division from the following World Team Championship.

In doubles with Tiago Apolónia, Monteiro was able to qualify for the Pro Tour Grand Finals in 2011, where they were eliminated in the quarterfinals. In 2012 he again took part in the Olympic Games , but against William Henzell he lost his first game again in the individual while he reached the quarter-finals with the team. At the 2012 World Cup , the Portuguese team made it into the main round and finished in 11th place.

Monteiro celebrated several international successes from 2013 onwards. This year he won the European Championship bronze with Apolónia in doubles, in 2014 he won the European Championship with the Portuguese team with a 3-1 final victory over the favorites and defending champions Germany . In 2015 he reached his best position in the world rankings with 29th place, made it to the last 32 in the single world championship as well as in the doubles round, won the European Games with the team and won gold in doubles with the Austrian Stefan Fegerl at the European championship . In 2016 he was able to take part in the Europe Top-16 for the first time . There he beat Dimitrij Ovtcharov in the group stage , but then lost the final against him. This second place enabled Monteiro his first World Cup participation , where he reached the round of 16. At the 2016 World Team Championship , Portugal reached the quarter-finals for the second time in a row. In October, Monteiro also won mixed gold at the European Championships with his wife Daniela Dodean - the third European Championship gold and the fourth European Championship medal in a row. At the 2017 European Team , he won silver with Portugal.

João Monteiro was the Portuguese champion in singles five times in a row, his club Deportivo Sau Roque was one of the best teams in Portugal. In 2006 he moved to Germany to the Bundesliga club TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen , where he stayed for three years. Then he went to Italy to Sterilgarda TT Castelgoffredo. From the 2011/12 season he played table tennis at 1. FC Saarbrücken , and in 2013 he was signed by the Russian club UMMC Verkhnaya Pyshma . Since the 2015/16 season he played for Chartres ASTT . For the 2017/18 season he moved to Portugal to Sporting Lisbon .

In July 2013 he married the Romanian table tennis player Daniela Dodean , with whom he has had a daughter since 2015.
