from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 53rd World Table Tennis Championships for teams took place from February 24th to March 2nd, 2008 in Guangzhou . The Chinese city was awarded the contract in May 2005 by the participants of the Annual General Meeting of the world association ITTF . After 1961 , 1995 and 2005, China has hosted the World Table Tennis Championships for the fourth time .

The title fights were held in the Guangzhou High School . The Chinese team became world champions in both men and women.

Competition mode

The women's and men's competitions will be held in the same way.

According to the results of the last World Team Championship , the teams will be divided into 4 divisions. The strongest 24 teams play in the 1st division. The 2nd and 3rd divisions also consist of 24 teams, the remaining teams compete in the 4th division. Only the participants of the 1st division play for the world title, with the other divisions it is the places 25 down.

In the first three divisions there are four groups A, B, C and D with six teams each. The teams are drawn into the groups in the run-up to the World Cup. In each group, the teams determine the order of precedence using the Everyone versus Everyone procedure.

Following the group matches of the 1st division, the finals will be played in the knockout system according to the following scheme: The first placed of the four groups are qualified for the quarter-finals. The runners-up and thirds play in the round of 16. In this way, places 1 to 12 are determined.

The remaining teams in the 1st division are fighting for places 13 to 24. The last two groups, i.e. 8 teams, will be drawn to form 4 pairings. The winners of these pairings play against the group fourth for places 13 to 20.

23rd and 24th place in the 1st division are relegated to the 2nd division, the first two in the 2nd division are promoted. This is important for the division allocation at the next World Cup.

In a team match, the Modified Swaythling Cup system is used. A maximum of 5 single games are possible. If a team has won 3 games, the fight is over. Each pairing is played in 3 winning sets.

The women finished second in Group C after victories over Thailand, Austria, Belarus and Spain and a loss to Hong Kong. In the round of 16 they lost to Romania 2: 3. After victories over the USA and Croatia, they came in 9th.

With 7th place, the German national team missed a medal for the first time since 2001, but sporting director Dirk Schimmelpfennig assessed the World Cup result as successful due to the numerous injuries-related failures.

ITTF Congress

At the ITTF Congress Board of Directors , which took place parallel to the games , the previous regulation on the use of foreigners in world championships (World Championships, World Cup ) was changed. If an active player wants to change an association and was previously active for another association, the new association must register this player with the ITTF . There is a waiting period from the time of registration, only after that it can be used by the new association. The waiting period is three years for young people under 15, five years for 15 to 17 year olds and seven years for 18 to 20 year olds. Older players are no longer allowed to change associations.

This regulation comes into force on September 1, 2008. It does not apply retrospectively. It is intended to curb the method that has often been practiced up to now that players who have been retired in China, for example, represent other countries internationally.
