The 15th table tennis world championship took place from February 4th to 11th 1948 in London / Wembley (England). The venue was the Empire Pool (today's Wembley Arena ) in Wembley.

As in Paris in 1947, Germany was not represented. Switzerland was also absent for financial reasons.

In the women's category , Gizella Farkas won the title due to a wrong decision by the referee. In the semifinals against Angelica Rozeanu , the time game started in the fifth set when the score was 22:22 . According to the rule, the next point should now decide if it was achieved within 5 minutes. Rozeanu took the next point and should have won the game. However, the referee allowed Jimmy Rose to continue playing up to a two-point lead in ignorance of the rule. Farkas finally won that set 29:27. Because of this irregularity, the tournament management had the game repeated the next day. This time Farkas won regularly 3-0 and made it into the final.
