Margaret Franks

Margaret "Peggy" Franks (born before 1947) is an English former table tennis player from the 1940s and 1950s. She was once world champion in doubles and twice in team competition.

Career

Margaret Franks - mostly called "Peggy" in professional circles - took part in eight world championships from 1947 to 1955 . In 1947 and 1948 she was world champion with the English team. In 1948 she won the doubles title with Vera Thomas (formerly Vera Dace) by winning the final against the English-Scottish couple Dóra Beregi / Helen Elliot . In 1949 she was defeated in the final of the team competition of the USA team and won silver. There are also six bronze medals, namely in 1950 , 1951 and 1952 in the team competition, in 1947 in mixed with Victor Barna , in 1949 in mixed with Johnny Leach and in 1950 in doubles with Vera Thomas.

She achieved further successes in 1948 at the Welsh Open in doubles with Adele Wood and a year later when she won all disciplines at the French Open: singles, doubles with Yolande Vannoni and mixed with Richard Bergmann .

In July 1949 she was ranked seventh in the ITTF world rankings .

Private

Margaret Franks is the daughter of a boxer. In January 1950 she married the English table tennis player Ronald Hook, with whom she has a son. The couple work in a toy factory in Walthamstow (London).
