Ulrich was chairman of the CDU district association Burgenlandkreis from 2006 to 2018. In 2018 he did not run for the district chairmanship again on the grounds that the office of the district administrator was difficult to reconcile with the district chairmanship of a party. He was up office as District Chairman of the CDU faction in the council of the castle district.

Götz Ulrich was elected district administrator of the Burgenland district in a runoff election on June 15, 2014. The turnout was 23 percent.

Further topics are the integration of refugees and EU foreigners in the Burgenland district through the establishment of a migration agency and the better integration of the Burgenland district into the European metropolitan region of Central Germany .

Since 2014 he has been actively involved in the recognition of Naumburg Cathedral as a UNESCO World Heritage Site , which was also achieved at the 42nd meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Bahrain .

Due to the location of the Burgenland district in the Central German lignite district , Ulrich is committed to not rushing the coal phase-out, in particular to choose a long-term period for the phase-out from lignite generation in order to avoid a structural break in the Central German lignite area.

Threats after deployment for refugees

After the xenophobic protests and the arson attack in Tröglitz (a 3000-inhabitant town in his district) in March and April 2015, Götz Ulrich spoke out in favor of holding onto refugee accommodation there. He then received several e-mails with threats in which he said he was personally threatened and announced that this would not be the last step. The district should refrain from housing the refugees. Ulrich was then placed under police protection.
