Hans Liermann (born April 23, 1893 in Frankfurt am Main , † February 22, 1976 in Erlangen ) was a German constitutional and canon lawyer.

Life

From 1911 Liermann studied law in Freiburg im Breisgau and Halle (Saale) , passed the legal traineeship in the higher regional court district of Naumburg and, after participating in the First World War and changing to the Baden preparatory service, again in Karlsruhe (1919). In the same year he received his doctorate. jur. In 1921 he passed the assessor exam. In 1926 he qualified as a professor at the University of Freiburg for public law and canon law .

In 1929 Liermann succeeded Emil Sehling as a full professor of canon law, German and Bavarian legal history at the University of Erlangen . From 1933 he was a supporting member of the SS , from 1934 to 1935 a member of the National Socialist German Lecturer Association , and a member of other Nazi organizations. In 1961 he retired. He turned down appointments to Prague, Königsberg and Jena. During the time of the church struggle, Liermann was a member of the regional synodal committee. In 1959 he became President of the Constitutional and Administrative Court of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany (VELKD) . He was a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (since 1965), the advisory board of the Working Group of German Foundations, honorary member of the Society for Franconian History.

The Hans Liermann Institute for Canon Law at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg was named after him.
