Helen Elliot , married Hamilton (born January 20, 1927 in Edinburgh , † January 12, 2013 ) was a Scottish table tennis player who was world champion in doubles in 1949 and 1950 .

Career

Helen Elliot started playing table tennis at the age of 16. She quickly developed into the top player in Scotland. From 1945 to 1958 she won the individual competition of the Open Championships of Scotland 13 times in a row.

From 1947 to 1957 she was nominated for nine world championships . She reached the quarter-finals in individual 1947 , 1948 , 1949 and 1952 . In 1948 she reached the doubles final with the Hungarian Dóra Beregi , which was lost to the English Margaret Franks / Vera Thomas . A year later she won the doubles title with Hungarian Gizella Farkas , which she defended in 1950 with her former partner Dóra Beregi. She won silver again in 1955 in a mixed with Aubrey Simons (England). There were also three bronze medals, namely in 1952 in doubles with Ermelinde Wertl (Austria) and in 1957 in doubles with Maria Golopenta-Alexandru and in mixed with the Czech Ludvík Vyhnanovský .

1955 Elliot was together with Angelica Rozeanu student world champion in doubles. At the European Championships in 1958 , she reached the quarter-finals in singles and doubles.

In the ITTF world rankings , Elliot was mostly in the top ten from 1947 to 1957. In 1947/48 it was ranked fifth.

Because of her successes, she was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Scottish Sports in 2001. Around 2000 she was President of the Scottish Table Tennis Association, later Honorary President.

Private

In 1949 Helen Elliot married her trainer Bob Dykes, who later became the manager of the Scottish Table Tennis Association. he died in October 1961. In December 1961 she gave birth to a daughter. After another marriage, she called herself Helen Hamilton.
