The 1st European table tennis championship took place in Budapest from March 2nd to 19th, 1958 .
For the first time, the GDR managed to perform with its own team. The most successful was Hungary, which won the men's team competition, the women's and men's individual disciplines as well as the mixed . There are also three other silver medals.
Competition mode teams
A total of 18 nations were represented. Denmark, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy, Portugal and Spain stayed away from the tournament.

A women's team consisted of two players. The game was played according to the Corbillon Cup system , i.e. first two singles, then one double and then again a maximum of two singles.
The men played with teams of three according to the Swaythling Cup system , i.e. without doubles.

Cutting off the Germans
Men's team Germany
The West German team started in group A. Here it brought the ČSR with 5: 1 the only defeat. Further victories against Sweden, Poland and Bulgaria. The games against Austria and Yugoslavia were each lost 3: 5. This meant that Germany was tied with Sweden and Yugoslavia in second place. A differentiation based on the game ratio was not made.
GDR men's team
The GDR won in Group B against Greece and Switzerland 5-0 each. The rest of the games were lost (Hungary, Romania, England, France, USSR). With 2: 5 points it was enough to finish sixth.
Women's team Germany
The women won Group A against Bulgaria. With six defeats they ended up tied with Bulgaria and Yugoslavia in last place.
Women's team GDR
The women of the GDR had two victories in Group B against Austria and Switzerland. There were five defeats, which ultimately meant sixth place.
Men's singles Germany
Conny Freundorfer won against Markovic II (Yugoslavia) and Farkas (Hungary) and then lost to the Romanian Matei Gantner . Erich Arndt eliminated the Greeks Jamakopulos and the Bulgarians Schivatschev after a bye before hefailedto Ladislav Štípek (ČSR). Anton Breumair won against Viliam Polakovič (ČSR) and then lost to Stephen Cafiero (France). For Dieter Köhler ,too, itwas the end of the line after defeating Janez Teran (ČSR) in the second round against Josef Sedelmayer (Austria). Josef Seiz lost to Helmut Hanschmann (GDR)in the first round.
GDR men's singles
Helmut Hanschmann was the most successful GDR player. After beating Josef Seiz , he eliminated Josip Vogrinc (Yugoslavia) and Alan Rhodes (England), only to be defeated by the Hungarian Janos Halasz. Heinz Schneider advanced one round against Aleksandar Grujic (Yugoslavia), but not against Markovic I (Yugoslavia). Heinz Haupt was eliminated immediately against Ivanov.
Women's singles Germany
Uschi Fiedler , who was stopped by Diane Rowe in the third round after victories over the Hungarians Kövecses and Erzsébet Heirits , made it furthest . The second round went to Hannelore Schlaf , who won against Zaharijan (USSR) and then lost to Eva Marosvolgyi (Hungary), and Eva Graf , who eliminated Julia Friesenhahn (Hungary) and then failed to Eva Uljaki (Hungary). Ulla Paulsen was eliminated immediately by Morvaine.
Women's singles DDR
All GDR women lost their first game in the individual competition: Liane Rödel (against Mirjana Plut, Yugoslavia), Ute Mittelstädt (in the preliminary round against Yvonne Baker, England), Isolde Woschee (against Jill Rook , England), Christa Bannach (after progressing without a fight against Katalin Mendel, Hungary).
Men's doubles
The GDR double Hanschmann / Haupt came very far . They won four victories against Buranyi / Nemeth (Hungary), Janez Teran / Kern (Yugoslavia), Foris / Müller (Hungary) and - surprisingly for the experts - against Berczik / Sidó . Then they were defeated by the later European vice champions Toma Reiter / Otto Bottner (Romania).
Schneider / Pleuse advanced one roundagainst René Roothooft / Stephen Cafiero (France), but not against the Austrians Karl Wegrath / Hans Zankl .
The all-German double Arndt / Haupt lost immediately to Josef Sedelmayer / Viktor Hirsch (Austria). Freundorfer / Seiz won against the Poles Zbigniew Calinski / Janusz Kusinski and then lost to Elemér Gyetvai / Jeno Csender (Hungary). Köhler and his Swedish partner Karlsson lost to the Hungarians Laszlo Földy / Zoltán Bubonyi .
Ladies doubles

The second round was reached by Arndt / Graf (victory over Karl Wegrath / Hildegard Hintner , Austria; defeat against Štípek / Szalkai, ČSR) and Freundorfer / Schlaf (victory over Machan / Eva Uljaki, Hungary; defeat against Vogrinc / Elliot , Yugoslavia / Scotland) . All other mixed pairs with West German or GDR participation were eliminated in the first round: Köhler / Polgarne (GER / Hungary) against W.Spiegelberg / Monique Jaquet (Switzerland), Schneider / Woschee against Machan / Eva Uljaki (Hungary), Breumair / Paulsen against Bryan Merrett / Shirley Jones (England / Wales), Hanschmann / Bannach against Miklos Peterfy / Erzsébet Heirits (Hungary), Seiz / Fiedler against Zoltán Berczik / Gizella Lantos (Hungary), Haupt / Mittelstädt against Bubonyi / Máthé (Hungary).
ETTU Congress
- President Jean Bélot (France) was confirmed in office.
- The organization of the next European championships in 1960 was awarded to Yugoslavia.
useful information
- Ivan Andreadis had previously been banned from his association for smuggling. This was seen by experts as a weakening of the ČSR.
