The 7th European table tennis championship took place in Moscow in April 1970 in the Sports Palace (near Red Square ).

The Swedish men's team won the title for the fourth time in a row. The women’s team won the USSR. The German men came in fifth, the women in seventh. The GDR did not provide a men's team, but a women's team, which won against the West German team and reached fifth place. In the women's category, the USSR won all competitions with Rudnowa, in the singles Soja Rudnowa , in the doubles Swetlana Grinberg / Soja Rudnowa and also the mixed Stanislaw Gomoskow / Soja Rudnowa succeeded in defending the title. The European champion in the men's singles was the Swede Hans Alsér , the double competition was won by Antun Stipančić / Dragutin Šurbek from Yugoslavia.

The greatest success for Germany was the silver medal in women's doubles with Agnes Simon / Diane Schöler . Eberhard Schöler was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the individual against Istvan Korpa (Yugoslavia). Diane Schöler also reached the quarterfinals in the singles, where she lost to Rita Pogosova (USSR).

Bernt Jansen complained in advance about health problems. He was therefore not excluded from participation and was replaced by Detlef Siewert .

Competition mode teams

For both women and men, five preliminary round groups with three or four teams each were drawn. The first two in each group qualified for the intermediate round. There were groups A and B with five teams each, which competed in the everyone against everyone mode. The winners of these two groups contested the final, the second placed fought for places three and four etc. The third and fourth placed in the preliminary round were sorted into the intermediate round groups C and D and played there for the back places.

Men's

A team consisted of three players who competed in the mode everyone-against-everyone. Doubles were not played. Thus a maximum of nine fights were possible, whereby the encounter ended after five victories (best-of-five). Romania did not provide a men's team.
