European table tennis championship 1984

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 14th European table tennis championship took place from April 14th to 22nd, 1984 in Moscow in the “Small Arena” of the Luzniki Sports Park near the Lenin Stadium. It was the second European Championship after 1970 that took place in Moscow.

The USSR women won four titles in which Valentina Popová was always involved: with the team, in singles, in doubles with Narine Antonyan and in mixed with Jacques Secrétin . In the men's team competition, France won the title, as did Secrétin in mixed. The Swede Ulf Bengtsson was the men's European champion in singles and the Yugoslavs Zoran Kalinić / Dragutin Šurbek in doubles .

The performance of the German participants was criticized as disappointing. Hungary did not win a medal for the first time at a European Championship.

Competition mode teams

It was played in the same mode as in the 1976 European Championship . The teams played in two performance categories, Category 1 and the lower Category 2, with the classification of categories taking into account the promoted and relegated teams of the previous European Championship in 1982 . In each of the two categories, two groups with at least six teams played in the mode everyone against everyone. The two table first and second from category 1 played for places 1 to 4, the third and fourth for places 5 to 8 and the fifth and sixth for places 9 to 12. The two table first and second from category 2 played similarly around places 13 to 16, etc.

In the placement games for places 1 to 4, the first from Group A played against the second from Group B. The winners fought for the European Championship, the losers for 3rd and 4th places. The other places were played out in the same way. A team fight was carried out according to the Swaythling Cup system for teams of three .

The first two of category 2 will fight for places 13 to 16. Places 13 and 14 entitle them to advance to the higher category 1 at the next European championship. Similarly, the penultimate and last from category 1 determine the relegated: They play places 9 to 12, with the eleventh and twelfth playing in category 2 at the next European Championship.

A similar system with two categories was provided for the women, who each consisted of teams of two and played according to the Swaythling Cup system , i.e. with four singles and one doubles.

Cutting off the Germans

The head coach of the Germans was the French Charles Roesch . He criticized the team spirit of the men's team. In the run-up to the event , Peter Engel had decided not to take part; Engelbert Hüging took over for him .

Istvan Korpa trained the women.

Men's team

The German team started in the 1st category in group B. After losses against Yugoslavia, ČSSR, USSR and Poland, they managed a 5-3 win against Italy. This was only enough for the penultimate fifth place. So in the intermediate round it was about places 9 to 12. Here the team won 5: 3 against England and 5: 4 against Bulgaria and came in ninth.

Women's team

The German women were also divided into group B of the 1st category and reached fifth place. They won against Yugoslavia and Poland 3-0 each, but lost against the ČSSR, the USSR and Romania. In the battle for places 9 to 12, they defeated Denmark 3-1 and defeated Finland 0-3. So they came in 10th.
