Ilija Lupulesku

Ilija Lupulesku (born October 30, 1967 in Uzdin ( Vojvodina Province ), Serbia ) is a former Yugoslav and now American table tennis player . He is runner-up in double competitions and three-time European champion.

Beginning

At the age of 9 the left-hander Ilija Lupulesku learned to play table tennis under the guidance of the trainer Jonica Bosika at the club STK Unirea Uzdin. After he had won the national championships for schoolchildren and young people several times, he was appointed to Yugoslavia's World Cup squad in 1983.

European Championships for Schoolchildren and Youth

At the European Schoolchildren Championships Lupulesku was third in singles in 1981 and second in 1982.

In 1983 he reached 3rd place with the Yugoslav team at the European Youth Championship. A year later he defeated the German Fetzner / Roßkopf in the double final together with Zoran Primorac , and he also won the mixed title (with Vesna Ojstersek). In singles he came in 3rd place. In 1985 he defended the doubles title with Primorac.

European championships

From 1986 to 2000 Lupulesku took part - with the exception of 1994 - in all European championships . In 1990 he became European champion in doubles (with Primorac), in 1988 in mixed with Jasna Fazlić and in 1998 in mixed with Otilia Bădescu . He took second place in doubles in 1988 (with Primorac), 1998 (with Greek Kalinikos Kreanga) and 2000 (with Kreanga) as well as in mixed 1986 (with Gordana Perkučin ) and 2000 (with Marie Svensson , Sweden).

World championships

Since 1983 Lupulesku has been nominated for all world championships . In 1987 he became vice world champion in doubles with Zoran Primorac . In 1991 he won silver with the team.

Olympic Summer Games

He also won silver in doubles at the 1988 Summer Olympics with Zoran Primorac .

United States

In the early 2000s, Lupulesku took on American citizenship. For the USA he competed in the 2004 Olympic Games and the World Championships from 2006. In 2002, 2003 and 2005 he won the USA championship in singles, in 2003, 2004 and 2005 in doubles.

Bundesliga

In the 2005/06 season Lupulesku moved from his home club STK Unirea Uzdin to SV Plüderhausen in the 2nd Bundesliga , which he left again in 2006 for the USA.

Private

From 1992 to 1997 Lupulesku was married to Jasna Fazlić .
