The 39th table tennis world championship took place from February 18 to March 1, 1987 in New Delhi ( India ). The venue was the Indira Gandhi Stadium.

General

A total of 60 men's teams and 50 women's teams competed. All 7 titles went to Asia, 6 of them to the “Middle Kingdom” China. Although the Swedish men showed a great improvement, they could not win the final against the Chinese team around world champion Jiang Jialiang .

In the men's singles Jan-Ove Waldner showed his capabilities and made it to the final, but had to acknowledge the superiority of the Chinese defending champion Jiang Jialiang .

In addition to Waldner, Europe was only able to score points in the men's doubles with the Yugoslavs Zoran Primorac / Ilija Lupulesku with a 2nd place and the Poles Leszek Kucharski / Andrzej Grubba with a 3rd place. All other medals stayed in Asia.

The German men's team achieved a good 7th place, the German women came in 14th.

Game system of team competitions

The category system used at earlier world championships is being replaced by a three-level system . The women's and men's teams play according to this system.

1st stage

In the first stage 16 groups A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, R, S are formed. The first 16 teams from the previous 1985 World Cup have been seeded, one of which is assigned to a group. The remaining teams are drawn into the groups. This creates groups of 4 or 5 teams.

2nd stage

Then the 16 group winners play for places 1 to 16, the second for places 17 to 32, the third for places 33 to 48 and the fourth for places 49 to 64.

For this purpose, 16 groups are formed in the 2nd stage according to the following scheme:

Group winner (place 1 - 16)

It means <x> 1 = winner of group <x> from the 1st level, for example R1 = winner of group R.

               Gruppe AA: A1, H1, K1, R1
               Gruppe BB: B1, G1, J1, S1
               Gruppe CC: C1, F1, L1, P1
               Gruppe DD: D1, E1, M1, N1
Second (17th - 32nd place)

It means <x> 2 = second from group <x> from the 1st level, for example G2 = second from group G.

               Gruppe EE: A2, G2, J2, S2
               Gruppe FF: B2, H2, K2, R2
               Gruppe GG: C2, E2, M2, N2
               Gruppe HH: D2, F2, L2, P2
Third (33rd - 48th place)

It means <x> 3 = third from group <x> from the 1st level, for example A3 = third from group A.

               Gruppe JJ: A3, H3, K3, R3
               Gruppe KK: B3, G3, J3, S3
               Gruppe LL: C3, E3, M3, N3
               Gruppe MM: D3, F3, L3, P3
Fourth (place 49 - 64)

It means <x> 4 = fourth from group <x> from the 1st level, for example P4 = fourth from group P.

               Gruppe NN: A4, H4, J4, R4
               Gruppe PP: B4, G4, K4, S4
               Gruppe RR: C4, F4, L4, P4
               Gruppe SS: D4, E4, M4, N4
3rd stage

At this stage, a play-off system is used initially.

Um Ränge 1 - 8 9 - 16 17 - 24 25 - 36
          ------------------------------------------------
          AA1 - DD2 AA3 - BB4 EE1 - HH2 EE3 - HH4
          BB2 - CC1 CC4 - DD3 FF2 - GG1 FF4 - GG3
          DD1 - CC2 CC3 - DD4 HH1 - EE2 HH3 - GG4
          AA2 - BB1 AA4 - BB3 GG2 - FF1 EE4 - FF3

For example, CC4 = fourth in group CC from the 2nd level.

Then the game continues according to a modified knockout system.

Criticism of this system

It was criticized that the pairings in the 3rd stage are fixed in advance. This enables tactical strategies in the 2nd level, so that in the 3rd level one meets "more pleasant" opponents. Critics of the Dutch women's team in the game against the USSR and the Polish men's team against Yugoslavia accused them of tactical defeats.

Therefore, it was suggested in future that the pairings for the 3rd level should only be drawn after the group games of the 2nd level have been completed.

Cutting off the Germans

Team competition men

With 17th place at the previous World Cup in 1985 , Germany would have moved up to Category A according to the then applicable category system. Therefore, the German team was ranked among the first 16 nations, was therefore seeded and was classified in group R in the 1st stage. Italy, North Yemen and Malta were drawn, but the latter stayed away from the event. After victories over North Yemen (5: 0) and Italy (5: 1), Germany took first place.

In the 2nd stage, Germany came second in Group AA. The 5-0 defeat against China was followed by victories against France (5-1) and England (5-4).

In the 3rd stage - the placement games 1 - 8 - the team lost to Sweden just 4: 5 ( Georg Böhm got three points, Ralf Wosik one point). So they got into the losers round for rank 5 - 8. Here they lost against Poland (1: 5, honor point by Georg Böhm) and then won the game for place 7 against Taiwan with 5: 2.

Jürgen Rebel could only be used in the last two team fights due to illness.

Team competition women

The women's team had to do without Olga Nemes , who had not gone to the World Cup due to illness and was replaced by Nicole Dekein .

The German team was seeded as 14th at the previous World Cup in 1985 and was classified in Group N in the first stage. Here they came first with two 3-0 wins against Isle of Man and Austria. The Philippines, which was also drawn, withdrew its team.

In the 2nd stage the team in group DD lost all games: against the Netherlands 0: 3, against the USSR 1: 3 and against Hong Kong 2: 3. In the third stage, this was only sufficient for the games for rank 9-16. After the 3-0 defeat against CSSR, they won the losing round against France 3-0, but then lost the game for 13th place against Hong Kong 3-2. This meant the same place 14 as in the previous World Cup.

Men's singles

Georg Böhm came the furthest of all Germans in singles and doubles. After victories over the Korean Hong Chol and the Canadian Horatio Pintea, he was eliminated in the third round against the Poland Leszek Kucharski . Steffen Fetzner failed in the qualifying round to Peter S.Jackson (New Zealand), as did Jürgen Rebel , who won against Jwat Hikmat (Palestine) and Istvan Poljak, but lost to the Indian Arun J. Barua. Jörg Roßkopf lost to Erik Lindh (Sweden) in the first game . Ralf Wosik also failed in round 1 to Ahn Jae-hyung (South Korea).

Men's doubles

At the latest in the 2nd main round, all German doubles were eliminated. Wosik / Rebel prevailed in the qualifying round against Mogens Sonnichsen / Claus Sandbye (Denmark) and Mashoor al Khatib / Mohamed al Khoder (Saudi Arabia), but after that the South Koreans Ahn Jae-hyung / Yoo Nam-Kyu were too strong. Fetzner / Roßkopf failed in the qualifying round against the North Koreans Chu Jong Chol / Kim Song-hui , before they had won against Oktay Cimen / Gurhan Yaldiz (Turkey). Georg Böhm came the furthest with his Swedish twin partner Thomas von Scheele . In the preliminary round they won against Nuno Dias / Diamantino Pinto (Portugal), Juan B. Perez / Jose M. Pales (Spain) and David McIlroy / Anwar Majid (Scotland). In the main round, they eliminated the Dutch Paul Haldan / Henk from Spanje, but could not progress against the Japanese Juzo Nukazuka / Kiyoshi Saitō .

Ladies singles

already in the first round, Ilka Böhning (against Jolanta Szatko-Nowak, Poland) and Katja Nolten (against Jelena Kowtun , USSR) were eliminated. Nicole Dekein came after a bye and a win against Katalina Iwanowa (Bulgaria) in the 3rd round, in which she was stopped by the Japanese Kiyomi Ishida. Margit Freiberg survived the qualifying round by beating Habil Souha (Syria) and Nihal Mischref (Egypt). After a bye, the main round 2 was the final stop against Chen Zihe (China).

Susanne Wenzel competed in the individual competitions for Luxembourg. She defeated the North Korean Kim Gyong Sun, but then lost to Daniela Gergeltschewa (Bulgaria).

Ladies doubles

The Dekein / Nolten double was quite successful . It survived two rounds against Elisabeth Robb / Janet Smith (Scotland) and Jose Bakker / Bettine Vriesekoop (Netherlands) and then failed to the Japanese Mika Hoshino / Miki Kitsukawa. Lospech had Böhning / Freiberg : They had no chance in the first round against the Chinese He Zhili / Jiao Zhimin .

Mixed

Fetzner / Nolten lost in round 1 against Massimo Costantini / Giorgia Zampini (Italy). Böhm / Böhning came one round further : The win over Lars Hauth / Charlotte Polk (Denmark) was followed by the end against Zsolt Harczi / Edit Urbán (Hungary). Rebel / Freiberg did not survive the qualifying round. They won against Malcolm Darroch / Sharon Coad (New Zealand), but then lost to Ron van Spanje / Brigitte Thiriet (Netherlands / France). Ralf Wosik had the Swede Pia Eliasson as a partner. They eliminated Pedro Miguel / Ana Placido (Portugal), Alain Bourbonnais / Jill Barton (Canada) and Walter Nathan / Monica Liyau (Peru) in the qualifying round and David Hannah / Elisabet Tobb (Scotland) in the main round, but were eliminated by Igor Podnossov / Walentina Popowa (USSR).
