The 51st table tennis world championship for teams took place from April 24th to May 1st, 2006 in Bremen . Individual competitions did not take place according to the schedule. Bremen was awarded the contract by the participants in the Annual General Meeting of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) in May 2003 after the association from Serbia and Montenegro withdrew its application for Belgrade and the Hanseatic city was the only candidate alongside London, New York and Shanghai.

After 1930 , 1959 , 1969 and 1989, Germany was the host of the table tennis world championship for the fifth time .

The title fights were held in the Bremen city hall . Around 60,000 spectators attended the event.

Game mode

The 24 teams of the 1st Division (Championship Division) competed in four groups of six in the mode everyone against everyone. Based on the team world rankings from March 2006, the four best teams were placed in the individual groups. The fifth and sixth were drawn into the groups with the third and fourth, the seventh and eighth in the remaining groups with the two WR firsts.

The group winners advance to the quarter-finals. The second and third placed determine the remaining four participants of the quarter-finals. The games for the next eight places 13 to 20 are still of interest because the first 18 teams qualify for the next World Team Championship in 2008. The fourth in each group intervene directly in these struggles. In addition, there are the winners of the games of the fifth and sixth placed, which are initially drawn against each other.

Other teams play in the 2nd division (24 teams), 3rd division (24 teams) and 4th division. In each of these divisions, the game is played according to the same pattern as in the (24 teams). The first two finishers move up to the next division.

For the next World Cup in 2008, the teams in places 1 to 18 and the two promoted teams from the 2nd division are eligible to play. There are also 4 nations according to the team world rankings.
