Ai Fukuhara ( Japanese 福 原 愛 , Fukuhara Ai ; born November 1, 1988 in Sendai ) is a Japanese table tennis player . In 2016 she took part in the Olympic Games for the fourth time.

Ai Fukuharas was introduced to table tennis at the age of three by her mother, a table tennis player. In 1999 she finished second in the Japanese Girls' Championship.

In the following years she took part in many Pro Tour tournaments for adults, in 2001 she improved by almost 200 places in the world rankings and was among the top 100 at the age of 13. In 2003 she was nominated for the first time for the world championship and As a 14-year-old she reached the quarter-finals in the singles - a result that she did not achieve again afterwards. The following year, she took for the first time at the Olympics, in part, won with the Japanese women's team world championship bronze and individual silver at the Asian Cup. When she first participated in the World Cup in 2005 , she beat numerous top players with Li Jiawei (# 3 in the world rankings), Tie Yana (# 9), Lin Ling (# 10), Lau Sui Fei (# 11) and Gao Jun (# 12) , won bronze and moved up to 16th place in the world rankings.

Her first medal on the Pro Tour was gold in doubles at the Taiwan Open 2006, and in singles she won bronze at the German Open that same year. In addition, she was able to win bronze with the team again . In 2007, at the age of 19, she moved up to the top 10 in the world rankings for the first time and qualified - in both singles and doubles - for the first time for the Pro Tour Grand Finals, where she was eliminated in the first round. They narrowly missed an Olympic medal in 2008 , with the team losing the game for third place against South Korea. In the singles she was eliminated in the round of 16 against the eventual winner Zhang Yining . In the course of 2008 and 2009 it gradually fell back to number 31 in the world rankings before it could increase again. In both 2008 and 2010 she was able to win bronze again with the Japanese team at the World Championships, in 2010 Fukuhara also reached the semi-finals at the Pro Tour Grand Finals and returned to the top 10. A year later she won silver in doubles with Kasumi Ishikawa at the Grand Finals and bronze in mixed with Seiya Kishikawa at the World Championships . Around 2010 she was trained by Tang Yuanyuan . In 2011 Ai Fukuhara became the first Japanese champion in singles.

At the 2012 Olympic Games , she lost to Ding Ning in the quarter-finals , and she won silver with the team. Placed in 10th place, she was surprisingly eliminated in the 2013 World Cup in the first round, but reached the quarter-finals in doubles with Sayaka Hirano . In 2014, for the first time since 2002, she did not take part in the World Cup, at the Grand Finals she reached the quarterfinals. In 2015 she was able to qualify again for the Grand Finals , but was eliminated immediately. In addition, she achieved her best position in the world rankings with rank 4. With the team, she won World Cup silver and Olympic bronze in 2016 - she finished 4th in the individual at the Olympic Games - after which she retired from professional sport at the age of 27.

Private

On September 1, 2016, Ai Fukuhara married the Taiwanese table tennis player Chiang Hung-Chieh . She has a daughter with him (* 2017).
