Table tennis world championship 2011
The 56th World Table Tennis Championships 2011 took place from May 8th to 15th, 2011 in Rotterdam in the Ahoy event center. Only the individual competitions were held. The Dutch city was awarded the contract in February 2008 by the participants in the Annual General Meeting of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). After 1955 and 1999 , the Netherlands hosted the World Table Tennis Championships for the third time .
Overview
Once again, the Chinese participants dominated the event and won all gold and silver medals. In men's singles, Zhang Jike won the fourth title in a row for China since 2005. With Ma Long / Xu Xin , the tenth title in a row since 1993 went to China. The women's successes were even more enduring: Ding Ning in singles (ninth title in a row since 1995) and Guo Yue / Li Xiaoxia in doubles (twelfth title in a row since 1989). In mixed, Zhang Chao / Cao Zhen won gold (eleventh title in a row since 1991).
In the semifinals, Timo Boll (Germany) was the only non-Chinese in the men's singles, Young Sik Jung / Kim Min-seok (Japan) in the men's doubles, Kim Kyung-ah / Park Mi-young (Korea) and Jiang Huajun / Tie Yana ( Hong Kong) in women's doubles and Seiya Kishikawa / Ai Fukuhara (Japan) in mixed.
A total of 801 players from 143 countries took part in the individual competition.
Performance of the German participants
Single men
- Timo Boll had deliberately refrained from participating in the doubles competition and - as in the previous World Championships - the mixed competition in order to concentrate exclusively on the individual competitions. After victories over Kenji Matsudaira (Japan), Yang Zi (Singapore), Robert Svensson (Sweden), Dimitrij Ovtcharov (Germany) and Chen Qi (China), he reached the semi-finals - as the only non-Chinese; Bronze was now safe for him. Here the future world champion Zhang Jike (China) showed himself to be superior and won with 4: 1. It was Boll's first individual world championship medal.
- Dimitrij Ovtcharov failed in the second round with 2: 4 to Timo Boll . He had previously won against Espen Rønneberg (Norway), Stefan Fegerl (Austria) and Seiya Kishikawa (Japan).
- Bastian Steger also reached the round of 16. After victories over Kim Nam Chol (North Korea), Seo Hyun-deok (South Korea) and Leung Chu Yan (Hong Kong), he lost to the Chinese Ma Lin .
- Zoltan Fejer-Konnerth won against Mattias Karlsson (Sweden) and Adrian Crișan (Romania), but failed in the third round to the Japanese Jun Mizutani .
- Patrick Baum also came on lap three by knocking Jewhen Pryshchepa (Ukraine) and Zoran Primorac (Croatia) out of the race. The South Korean Joo Se Hyuk was then too strong.
- Ruwen Filus advanced one round in his first World Cup participation against the Czech Petr Korbel . He then lost to Wang Liqin (China) 4-0.
- Christian Süß was unexpectedly eliminated in the first round against Jang Song-man (North Korea).
- Thomas Keinath from Germany started for Slovakia and reached the second round, where he lost to Joo Se Hyuk (South Korea).
Single women
- Wu Jiaduo got the furthest. She eliminated Linda Creemers (Netherlands), Song Ma Eum (South Korea) and Li Qiangbing (Austria). In the last sixteen she lost to the Chinese Guo Yue .
- Zhenqi Barthel reached the second round by defeating Nanthana Komwong (Thailand), where she failed to Wu Yang (China).
- Kristin Silbereisen unexpectedly lost against Spaniard Galia Dvorak in the first round.
- Also Sabine winter - the first time she took part in a World Cup - was defeated in the first round against Li Jiao (Netherlands).
- Kathrin Mühlbach was part of a world championship for the first time. She was beaten in the opening round by Wu Xue (Dominican Republic).
Double men
- Baum / Steger lost to the Chinese Ma Long / Xu Xin in the quarterfinals . Before that they had prevailed against Jesús Cantero / He Zhiwen (Spain), Kou Lei / Jewhen Pryschtschepa (Ukraine) and Kenta Matsudaira / Koki Niwa (Japan).
- Filus / Fejer-Konnerth won against Adrian Crișan / Andrei Filimon (Romania). In the second round they were eliminated by Chen Qi / Ma Lin (China).
- For Ovtcharov / Süß , the opening round against Alfredo Carneros / Carlos Machado (Spain) was the end of the line. The Germans' strikingly listless appearance in this match was criticized.
Double ladies
Both German doubles did not get beyond the second round.
- Barthel / Silbereisen defeated Beh Lee Wei / Chiu Soo Jiin (Malaysia) and lost to Feng Yalan / Mu Zi (China).
- Wu Jiaduo / Winter beat Ariel Hsing / Liliy Zhang (USA) and lost to Jiang Huajun / Tie Yana (Hong Kong)
Mixed
- Fejer-Konnerth / Barthel survived two laps with victories over Soumyadeep Roy / Poulomi Ghatak (India) and Ri Chol Guk / Kim Hye-song (North Korea). Then they lost 4-1 to the Chinese Yan An / Feng Yalan
- Filus / Mühlbach won against Daniel Reed / Hannah Hicks (England). In the second round they were eliminated against Adrian Crișan / Daniela Dodean (Romania).

useful information
- Out of 98 games against non-Chinese people, the Chinese participants won 96 games. Only Timo Boll in the singles against Chen Qi and Seo Hyun-deok / Seok Ha Jung (South Korea) in the mixed against Yan An / Feng Yalan could score against the Chinese. The South Korean women's doubles Lee Eun Hee / Park Young-sook also won against the Chinese Feng Yalan / Mu Zi, but the result was annulled because Lee Eun Hee played with a rubber that was too thick.
- About 10 players were disqualified for using improper clubs.
- The Russian Kirill Skachkov was disqualified because he freaked out several times and finally destroyed the border.
