Joo Se-hyuk ( Korean 주세혁, born January 20, 1980 in Seoul ) is a South Korean table tennis professional . He is right-handed and uses the shake hand grip. He is under contract with Butterfly and plays on the forehand with Tenergy 64, while on the backhand he uses long pimples like Tibhar Grass D.TecS or TSP Curl P1R on a Butterfly defense stick.
Career
He was internationally active as early as 1997, at the 1998 US Open he won the silver medal in doubles. In 2001 he took part in the World Cup and won bronze with the South Korean team, while he was eliminated early in the individual competitions. In October he was able to advance into the top 50 of the world rankings . By May 2003 he fell back to 61st place, but this month he won the silver medal at the World Cup after victories over Chuang Chih-Yuan and Ma Lin and a final defeat against Werner Schlager and moved up to 22nd place, which he did became the top-ranked defender in the world.
In October 2003 he took part in the World Cup for the first time , but was eliminated in the group stage, tied with Wang Liqin and Kalinikos Kreanga , who were placed before him . In 2004 he won bronze again at the Team World Championship , at his first Olympic Games he reached the round of 16 in singles and doubles, and at the World Cup he reached fourth place after beating Wang Hao 3: 4 in the game for third place had lost. After he had hardly been active internationally in 2005 - he lost his position as top-ranked defender to Chen Weixing - he played numerous tournaments again in 2006, won silver with the team at the World Cup and the Asian Games, and in singles he won gold at the Korea Open and qualified for the Pro Tour Grand Finals.
In 2007 he reached the quarter-finals at the World Championships in singles and mixed games and was again the best-placed defender, a position he then held until 2017. In 2008 he again won silver at the World Cup with the South Korean team . In May of this year he also made it into the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time, but did not take part in the Olympic Games . He reached the quarter-finals in both the World Cup and the Grand Finals in 2009, followed by bronze (individual) and silver (team) at the Asian Games in 2010, as well as another bronze medal with the team . At the World Cup and Grand Finals he was eliminated in the round of 16 in 2011, but at the World Cup he beat Timo Boll and Jun Mizutani , among others , and thus achieved 3rd place. At the beginning of 2012 he reached his best position in the world rankings number 5, but at the Olympic Games he was eliminated in the individual round of 32, while he won silver with the team. In his sixth World Cup participation with the team, he also won the sixth medal in a row with bronze. In 2014 this was no longer successful, South Korea was eliminated in the quarter-finals, but was able to win silver at the Asian Games, where Joo reached the semi-finals in the individual.
In 2015 he reached the round of 16 at the World Cup , and in 2016 he won bronze with the team again. At the Olympic Games he no longer competed in singles, he came in fourth with the team. He also won gold at the Croatia Open, but in 2017 he only played the Hungarian Open and then did not appear internationally.
In 2019, Joo Se-hyuk was signed by the Austrian first division club Wiener Neustadt.
