Jun Mizutani ( Japanese 水 谷 隼 , Mizutani Jun ; born June 9, 1989 in Iwata , Shizuoka Prefecture ) is a Japanese table tennis professional who plays in Tokyo for Meiji University and also for the Chinese super league club Sichuan. He is considered a great talent, as he was the youngest national Japanese champion to date at the age of 17 and can boast further international successes. The largest include a 2016 Olympic bronze medal , two victories at the ITTF Pro Tour Grand Finals and several silver and bronze medals with the national team at World and Asian Championships.

Career

Mizutani's parents were table tennis coaches in Japan. Mizutani started playing table tennis at the age of five. He was discovered by the German trainer Mario Amizic . In 2003 he came to Germany, where he joined the regional league team DJK SV Borussia 07 Münster . A year later he moved to DJK Germania Holthausen in the 2nd Bundesliga. From 2004 he was also increasingly active internationally in the adult sector, in Denmark he won bronze in doubles and thus his first medal on the Pro Tour . In 2005 he took part in a world championship for the first time and was among the last 32, and this year after a final defeat against Patrick Baum he was vice world champion. In October he moved up to a top 100 position in the world rankings for the first time. In 2006 he was signed by Borussia Düsseldorf , later he played for the Russian club UMMC Verkhnaya Pyshma .

With bronze he won his first individual medal on the Pro Tour at the Chinese Taipei Open 2007, at the Asian Championships in the same year he won bronze in doubles and - as in the next three competitions - silver with the team. Another great success followed in the team with a bronze medal in 2008 - after 14th place in the last participation - and Mizutani also qualified for the Olympic Games . In doubles with Seiya Kishikawa he reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2009 , in both singles and doubles he also won his first Pro Tour wins this year. In October he took part in the World Cup for the first time , and in the world rankings he got closer and closer to the top 10, which he finally reached in January 2010. That year he took bronze at the Asian Games, qualified for the first time for the Pro Tour Grand Finals, where he won gold in singles, and finished fourth in the World Cup , just as he did the year after. In 2012 he took part again in the Olympic Games , where he reached the second round in singles.

In doubles with Seiya Kishikawa, he also won bronze again at the 2013 World Cup , but in singles he was only among the last 128, and in the world rankings he temporarily fell back to 15th place. The following year was more successful, when he was able to win the Grand Finals again with a 4: 3 final victory over Dimitrij Ovtcharov and only narrowly missed a medal position at the World Cup for the third time in a row. With the team he won bronze at both the Asian Games and the World Cup . At the end of the year he was back on rank 5 in the world.

In 2015 he made it to the World Cup quarter-finals , his best placement to date. At the World Cup , he finished fourth for the fourth time in a row. He also showed strong performances in 2016: He won silver for the first time at the World Team Championship , at the Kuwait Open he took a 10: 4 lead against Xu Xin in the decisive set, but lost 10:12. He was then able to beat Xu Xin in the team final of the Olympic Games , where Mizutani won silver with the team and, after defeating Vladimir Samsonov, bronze in the individual. At club level he moved to Gazprom Fakel Orenburg , with whom he was able to win the Champions League straight away . Otherwise, however, he was unable to build on the strong performance from 2016 in 2017. At the World Cup in 2017 , he retired unexpectedly against the 13-year Tomokazu Harimoto from the World Cup against Simon Gauzy . With the introduction of the new world ranking calculation from 2018 , it fell out of the top 10 in the world. At the 2018 World Cup , he was again part of the Japanese team, which competed as the reigning runner-up, but surprisingly lost to England in the group stage and South Korea in the quarter-finals, and was thus eliminated for the first time since 2006 without a medal. In 2019, Mizutani took part in the World Cup, among other things , but was eliminated in the round of 32. From this year he also formed a mixed pair with Mima Itō , with whom he won silver at the Grand Finals , among other things .
