In the individual competitions, the 64 women and men automatically started in the main field, who were at the top of the ITTF world rankings from April 2015. Another 64 places in the main field were played out by the remaining participants in a qualification.
Similarly, the doubles and mixed competitions in the main field started with 64 pairs, 32 of which were seeded and another 32 had to qualify.
The doubles and mixed competitions were played in the qualifying round in three sets of wins. Otherwise, four sets of wins were played exclusively (singles, doubles and mixed in the main round). In addition, double partners from different nations were again allowed, which was made possible, for example, by the German-Chinese double combination Timo Boll / Ma Long . These mixed-national pairings were abolished at the 2000 ITTF Congress .
