Thiago Monteiro (born May 31, 1994 in Fortaleza ) is a Brazilian tennis player .

Career

Monteiro started playing tennis at the age of eight and speaks Spanish and English in addition to Portuguese. He mainly plays on the Future Tour and the ATP Challenger Tour ; on the former he has so far won five singles and two doubles titles. On the Challenger Tour he won the tournament in Aix-en-Provence in 2016 .

In 2016 he made his debut on the ATP World Tour in Rio de Janeiro at the Rio Open 2016 through a wildcard . In the first round he surprisingly defeated the top 10 player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6: 3, 3: 6, 6: 4. In the next round he was defeated by Pablo Cuevas in two sets. A week later he took part again with a wildcard at the tournament in São Paulo , the Brasil Open . There he surprised again with victories over the clay court specialist Nicolás Almagro and against Daniel Muñoz de La Nava , before failing again to Pablo Cuevas, who won the tournament as in the previous week. He also made his debut for the Brazilian Davis Cup team in 2016 .
