Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (born April 17, 1985 in Le Mans ) is a French tennis player . He is a Knight of the French Order of Merit .

Career

Adolescence

The public became aware of Tsonga, whose father is from the Congo, in 2003 when he defeated Marcos Baghdatis in the final of the junior competition of the US Open . In the same year he also reached the semifinals of the other three Grand Slam tournaments , making him second in the junior rankings. A year later he became a professional player.

Beginning of professional career (2005-2007)

In 2005 Tsonga went to the French Open for the first time in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. In the first round he lost to Andy Roddick in three sets. A herniated disc forced the 1.88 meter tall and 91 kilogram athlete from Le Mans to take a five-month break. Later I had shoulder problems and an abdominal muscle injury.

In the 2007 season, thanks to a wildcard, he was also in the main field at the Australian Open for the first time and met Roddick there again. This time he lost 7: 6, 6: 7, 3: 6 and 3: 6. The tie-break of the first set, which went 20:18 to the 21-year-old French who was in 212 position at the time, was the longest tie-break in the history of the tournament to date. Tsonga won four ATP Challenger titles in 2007: Tallahassee , Mexico City , Lanzarote and Surbiton . At the ATP tournament in the Queen's Club , he defeated the defending champion Lleyton Hewitt 7: 6 and 7: 6 in the second round, and in the round of 16 he was defeated by Marin Čilić 6: 4, 3: 6 and 2: 6. In Wimbledon he reached the round of 16 after victories over Julien Benneteau , Nicolás Lapentti and Feliciano López and failed there in three sets against his compatriot Richard Gasquet . In the world rankings he steadily improved to 74th place. At the US Open , he defeated Óscar Hernández 7: 5, 6: 1, 6: 3 and Tim Henman in his last match in a Grand Slam tournament 7: 6 , 2: 6, 7: 5, 6: 4. He then lost to the ailing world number two Rafael Nadal with 6: 7, 2: 6, 1: 6.

Final entry at the Australian Open and first tournament victories (2008-2010)

Tsonga at the 2009 French Open

His greatest success to date was when he won the semifinals of the Australian Open over Nadal. With the 6: 2, 6: 3 and 6: 2 victory, he reached his first Grand Slam final in 2008, which he lost against Novak Đoković 6: 4, 4: 6, 3: 6, 6: 7 . On January 12, 2008, he had secured his second double title when he won the final in Sydney with Gasquet against world number one Bob and Mike Bryan with 4: 6, 6: 4, [11: 9].

After a quarter of a year injury break from a meniscus , he celebrated his comeback at the US Open . There he lost after victories over Ventura and Carlos Moyá to the 15th seeded Tommy Robredo in three sets. On September 28th, Tsonga had his first tournament success in Bangkok . There he defeated the world number three Đoković 7: 6, 6: 4 in the final. On November 3, he also won the $ 2.7 million Masters tournament in Paris with a final victory over David Nalbandian (6: 3, 4: 6, 6: 4). Through this success, he secured participation in the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, where he failed after a victory over Đoković, the eventual cup winner, and two defeats in the preliminary round.

At the Australian Open 2009 he was eliminated in the quarter-finals by a four-set defeat against Fernando Verdasco, who was in 8th position . In February he won his third ATP title at the tournament in Johannesburg by defeating Jérémy Chardy 6: 4, 7: 6 in the final. In the same month he also won the tournament in Marseille by beating Michaël Llodra in the final .

In 2010, Tsonga was able to move into the semi-finals at the Australian Open , but clearly failed in three sets against Roger Federer . He didn't even make it to the final this season, especially since he couldn't play a game from July to September due to an injury. At the end of the year he was 13th in the world rankings, three places lower than a year earlier.

Ten finals and silver medal at the Olympic Games (2011–2012)

The French doubles after winning the silver and bronze medals in the 2012 Olympics in London

In April, after working together for seven years, he separated by mutual agreement from his coach Éric Winogradsky . On June 29, he was able to return the favor for his last defeat against Federer when he defeated him in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in a five-set thriller after a 2-2 set deficit and thus made it to the semifinals in London for the first time. There he was defeated by Đoković in four sets (6: 7, 2: 6, 7: 6, 3: 6). In autumn he won two tournaments in a row ( Metz , and Vienna one week later ) and was thus able to qualify for the World Tour Finals for the second time (after 2008) . With wins over Mardy Fish , Rafael Nadal and Tomáš Berdych , he made it into the final, where he lost to Federer 3: 6, 7: 6, 3: 6.

At the 2012 Olympic Games , Tsonga reached the final in doubles with Michaël Llodra. They were defeated by the Bryan brothers 4: 6, 6: 7 and thus won silver. In the individual, Tsonga was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Đoković in two sets (1: 6, 5: 7). After a year and a half without a coach, Tsonga signed the Australian Roger Rasheed in October 2012 , from whom he separated again in August 2013.

Injury bad luck at Wimbledon and a two-month forced break (2013-2016)

In the 2013 season, Tsonga experienced ups and downs. The year began for him with a quarter-finals at the Australian Open and a victory in the first round encounter in the Davis Cup against Israel. In Marseille he celebrated his tenth tournament victory on the World Tour with a final victory over Tomáš Berdych. In Monte-Carlo he reached the semifinals, in which he was defeated by Nadal in two sets. In May he played his way into the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the fifth time at the French Open . After beating Federer in the quarterfinals, he met David Ferrer , to whom he was defeated in three sets. In the second round of Wimbledon he had to give up against Ernests Gulbis in the third set. He eventually had to undergo knee treatment and take the next two months off because he sustained an injury to his patellar tendon . The Frenchman made his comeback in September at the tournament in Metz , where he reached his 18th ATP final, which he lost to Gilles Simon . At the end of the year he was 10th in the world rankings.

Right at the beginning of the 2014 season he won the Hopman Cup together with Alizé Cornet . It was the first French victory in this team competition. In February he reached the final at the tournament in Marseille , which he lost to Ernests Gulbis in straight sets. At the Masters tournament in Toronto in August, he defeated Novak Đoković, Andy Murray , Grigor Dimitrov and Roger Federer (7: 5, 7: 6 in the final) four top ten players in succession and thus secured his second title in the ATP category World Tour Masters 1000 to Paris 2008. After falling out of the top ten in the world rankings in March 2014, this success brought him back to 10th place.

Tsonga had to cancel his participation in the Australian Open 2015 due to a forearm injury. On his comeback in Miami , he was eliminated in the third round 4-6, 6-7 against Gaël Monfils . At the French Open , Tsonga reached the semi-finals for the second time since 2013. There he was defeated by Stan Wawrinka in four sets . In Metz he celebrated his twelfth tournament victory with a three-set win against Gilles Simon. With his victory over Richard Gasquet in the round of 16 at Wimbledon 2016 , he won his 104th Grand Slam match. More than any other Frenchman in the Open Era . Tsonga could not win a tournament in the whole of 2016, but was able to finish the season in 12th place in the world rankings, which was also achieved through the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open .

Four titles in one season and another serious injury (since 2017)

In 2017, he was only successful at the Grand Slam tournaments at the Australian Open , where he was able to advance to the quarter-finals. Tsonga lost there against Stan Wawrinka. However, he won four tournaments this year, more than ever in one season. Initially, Tsonga won the Rotterdam tournament in February . In the final he defeated David Goffin 4: 6, 6: 4, 6: 1. Just a week later, he won his next title in Marseille with a two-set win over his compatriot Lucas Pouille . In May he prevailed at the first tournament in Lyon against Tomáš Berdych 7: 6, 7: 5. He won his fourth title of the season in Antwerp with a 6: 3, 7: 5 over Diego Schwartzman . At the end of the year, his country also celebrated winning the Davis Cup . Tsonga struggled with some injuries in the middle of the year and also became a father for the first time, which slowed his performance. Despite four tournament victories, he ended the year only in 15th place in the world rankings, as he only reached one Grand Slam quarter-finals and did not make it past the second round in any of the Masters tournaments.

In 2018 he only played the Australian Open at the beginning of the year , where he was eliminated in the third round against Nick Kyrgios, and the tournament in Montpellier when he reached the semi-finals. He then suffered from a meniscus injury until September, which he sustained in the semifinals. By the end of the year he only won one match in four tournaments. He could not contribute to this with a defeat against Marin Čilić in the 3-1 Davis Cup victory for France in the final.

Tsonga started 2019 with the semi-finals at the tournament in Brisbane . There he was defeated by Daniil Medvedev in two sets. He won his first title of the season at the tournament in Montpellier when he defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert in straight sets.

Private

Tsonga has been married to his long-time girlfriend Noura El Shwekh since July 2018. Tsonga and El Shwekh had a son in March 2017.
