Alizé Cornet (born January 22, 1990 in Nice ) is a French tennis player . She plays in the German tennis Bundesliga for the TC Blau-Weiss Bocholt , with whom she became German team champion in 2012 , 2013 and 2014 .
Career
Junior career and rapid ascent: 2005 to 2007
Cornet, who started playing tennis at the age of four, already had great success as a junior. In 2006 she won the prestigious Banana Bowl in São Paulo , and a year later the junior women’s competition at the French Open after a three-set win over Mariana Duque Mariño . In 2005 she received a wildcard for the main round of the women's competition , in which she immediately reached the second round after a success over Alina Schidkowa , in which she lost to her compatriot Amelie Mauresmo .
In 2006 Cornet won her first match in the main draw of a WTA tournament as a qualifier in Bogotá and reached the quarter-finals in Acapulco the following week . After a first round defeat at the French Open against Venus Williams , she reached the second round at Wimbledon as a lucky loser , in which she was defeated by Ai Sugiyama in three sets. This was followed by another ITF title in Dnipro and her first third round participation in a Grand Slam tournament in New York , where Cornet first eliminated Samantha Stosur and Caroline Wozniacki as qualifiers , before knocking out Jelena Janković in three sets. By making it to the finals of the ITF tournament in the $ 100,000 category in Bordeaux , she climbed to 57th position in the tennis world rankings at the end of the season .
The way to the top of the world: 2008
The following year Cornet reached their first WTA final in Acapulco , but lost there against Flavia Pennetta in three sets. She then reached the semifinals in both Amelia Island and Charleston and celebrated her final international breakthrough in Rome when she stormed into the final from qualification and with Svetlana Kuznetsova and Anna Tschakwetadze achieved her first two victories over top 10 players. There she had to admit defeat to Jelena Janković. In Budapest , Cornet then succeeded after a final victory over Andreja Klepač her first tournament victory on the WTA tour and did not give up a set during the entire tournament. At the same time, she also triumphed in doubles alongside Janette Husárová . At the Olympic Games in Beijing she was able to move into the round of 16 in the singles after victories over Nicole Vaidišová and Peng Shuai , where she was defeated by Serena Williams in three sets. In doubles, she was defeated by her compatriot Virginie Razzano at the start of the third placed duo Chan Yung-jan and Chuang Chia-jung from Taiwan . With another semifinal participation in New Haven and reaching the third round at the US Open , she made her first jump into the top 20 of the world rankings.
Years of weakness: 2009 to 2012
After Cornet reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open in early 2009 , where she failed dramatically to Dinara Safina , and then made it to the quarter-finals at the GDF Suez Open in Paris in 2009 , she moved up to eleventh position in the world rankings, her best to date World ranking, forward. The rest of the season was disappointing, however, so that instead of advancing into the absolute world class, after only one semi-final in Bad Gastein at the end of the year, it fell back to 50th place. The intermittent form crisis dragged on for large parts of the 2010 and 2011 seasons, in which Cornet could not even begin to repeat the results of her meteoric rise. In 2010 she won her second WTA title in doubles with Vania King in Strasbourg , but was eliminated from all four Grand Slam tournaments in the first round; In 2011 she did not reach a single quarter-finals on the WTA tour and ended the year just under the top 100 in the world. It was not until 2012 that she was back in the final of a WTA tournament in Strasbourg after a four-year break, but lost there to Francesca Schiavone . Cornet achieved her second WTA triumph a month later in Bad Gastein after a two-set win in the final over Yanina Wickmayer . At the Olympic Games in London she moved into the second round after defeating Tamira Paszek , in which she failed to Daniela Hantuchová . In doubles with Kristina Mladenovic , the elimination came in round one against Peng Shuai and Zheng Jie from China .
Return to old strength: 2013 and 2014
In 2013 Cornet fought back into the top 30 in the world rankings after a solid season. In addition to winning the title in Strasbourg , where she prevailed against Lucie Hradecká in the final , she made it into the third round at the French Open , Wimbledon and the US Open . By reaching two more WTA semifinals in Acapulco and Washington as well as the fourth round in Miami , she was able to qualify for the International Tournament of Champions in Sofia, where she after a victory over Marija Kirilenko and two subsequent defeats against Simona Halep and Anastassija Pavlyuchenkova in eliminated in the group stage.
At the beginning of the 2014 season, Cornet won the Hopman Cup with her compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga , although she could only win one of her four individual encounters there. It was France's first success in this competition. She then showed strong early form and scored the third round in Melbourne for the first time since 2011. In Paris , she advanced to the semi-finals, in Dubai even to the final, after beating world number one Serena Williams in the previous round. In the final, however, she had no chance against her sister Venus. After a round of 16 in Indian Wells , she crowned her strong early form with her third WTA title in Katowice , where she first eliminated world number three Agnieszka Radwańska in the semifinals and defeated Camila Giorgi in the final. At Wimbledon , she caused a stir in the summer with another success over Serena Williams in the third round, before failing in the second round to Eugenie Bouchard . Through another final in Guangzhou , reaching the quarter-finals in Wuhan as a result of her third success of the season over Williams, this time after giving up, as well as the third round in Beijing , she qualified again for the International Tournament of Champions . There she retired after a win against Jekaterina Makarowa and two defeats against Flavia Pennetta and Garbiñe Muguruza as in the previous year in the group stage. Nevertheless, Cornet finished the season in the top 20 in the world for the first time since 2008.
Since 2015
After the fluctuations of previous years, Cornet established herself as a solid top 50 player at the beginning of the 2015 season, who repeatedly attracted attention through isolated successes. So she defeated the world number two Simona Halep in Madrid in 2015 and made it into the second round of the French Open for the first time, in which she was defeated by Elina Switolina . She was also able to celebrate her third WTA double title with Jaroslawa Schwedowa in Hong Kong . In 2016 she won her fifth WTA title at the start of the season in Hobart after a straight two-set win over Eugenie Bouchard. In Paris and London she achieved the third round each. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro this time she only competed in singles and first beat Johanna Larsson before she was eliminated in the second round against Serena Williams.
In 2017, Cornet achieved her best result of the year right at the start of the season in Sydney by making it into the finals, after beating two top 10 players in the previous rounds with Dominika Cibulková and Garbiñe Muguruza. In the final she had to admit defeat Karolína Plíšková in straight sets. She also scored the fourth round at the French Open and the quarter-finals in Wuhan , which she lost to Maria Sakkari .
At the beginning of 2018 it was announced that Cornet had to answer for three missed doping tests between November 2016 and October 2017 before the International Tennis Federation . After interpreting the anti-doping regulations, she was threatened with a ban of up to two years from all international competitions. Until the verdict was announced, Cornet was still allowed to take part in all tournaments of the WTA and ITF, on the condition that if she was found guilty, all world ranking points collected up to that point as well as the prize money won would be retroactively withdrawn. On May 15, the ITF announced that the doping suspicion against Cornet would be dropped because the responsible doping control officer had not done everything according to the requirements to find out about the whereabouts of the French woman in advance of the third missed test. In the same year Cornet was able to achieve her sixth and so far last title triumph on the WTA tour in Gstaad after she defeated Mandy Minella in the final ; In 2019, she lost to her compatriot Fiona Ferro in three sets in the final in Lausanne and ended the season in the top 100 of the world rankings for the thirteenth time in a row.
Fed Cup
In 2008 Cornet made her debut for the French Fed Cup team in the quarter-final duel against China . Since then she has played 26 singles and doubles games for her country, of which she was able to win eight (singles balance 4:14). In 2016 she reached the final in Strasbourg with France for the first time and lost 3-2 to the Czech Republic there . She lost both her singles match against Barbora Strýcová and the doubles at Pauline Parmentier's side , also against Strýcová and Lucie Hradecká. The triumph in Brisbane against Australia finally followed in 2019 . Even if Cornet was not used in either the final or the semi -finals, she had a share in the title win thanks to her individual victory against Elise Mertens in the 3-1 quarter-final victory over Belgium .
