Barbora Strýcová (born March 28, 1986 in Pilsen , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech tennis player and former world number one in women's doubles. Her greatest success was winning the double title at Wimbledon 2019 . Between 2007 and 2015 it started under the name Záhlavová-Strýcová .

Career

Junior career: 2001 to 2003

Strýcová, who started tennis at the age of four, was an outstanding junior and number one in the junior tennis world rankings . In singles she won the Australian Open junior competition in 2002 after beating Marija Sharapova in the final and defended the 2003 title against Viktorija Kutuzova . Already in 2001 she won the double competition alongside Petra Cetkovská and won the Banana Bowl with her compatriot in the same year . Together with Anna-Lena Grönefeld , she then triumphed at the Orange Bowl and the following year at the Trofeo Bonfiglio , where she also secured the individual title. In 2002 she also won the youth tournament of the French Open , also together with Grönefeld, and triumphed at Wimbledon , there alongside Elke Clijsters .

Early successes: 2003 and 2004

At the same time, Strýcová started on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour in 2002 and won her first two professional titles in the $ 25,000 category that same year. In 2003 she made her debut at the Australian Open in qualifying a Grand Slam tournament, but was eliminated in the second round. At Wimbledon , she then successfully qualified for the main round for the first time, but lost to Tetjana Perebyjnis in the first round with 9:11 in the extension of the third set. At the Australian Open 2004 , after a two-set win against Arantxa Parra-Santonja , she survived the opening round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time before she was beaten by Lina Krasnoruzkaja in the following match . Years of search for forms: 2005 to 2009

But instead of working his way up the ranking, Strýcová fell back significantly in the following year after weaker performances that dragged on over the entire 2006 season. Only in doubles did she get her first two WTA titles in 2005: in Warsaw alongside Tetjana Perebyjnis and in Rabat with Émilie Loit . It was not until 2008 that Strýcová managed to return to the top 100 in the world rankings, after having made it into the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time from qualifying after three titles in the $ 25,000 category on the ITF Tour, at Wimbledon . in which she was defeated by Svetlana Kuznetsova . Consolidation among the top 100: 2010 to 2013

In 2010 Strýcová was in her first individual final on the WTA tour in Prague . Although she had to admit defeat to Ágnes Szávay there, she was listed in the top 50 of the world rankings for the first time the following week. 2012 Strýcová achieved their third WTA individual final in Palermo . There she was clearly defeated by Sara Errani in two sets, but was able to win the doubles title alongside Renata Voráčová. In Stuttgart she won her last title together with Benešová. On October 16, 2012, a routine doping test was carried out at Strýcová during the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open and it turned out positive; The substance sibutramine was detected in her blood . Nevertheless, she ended the year in the top 30 of the ranking for the first time. After moving into the semi-finals in Sydney at the start of the 2017 season, Strýcová achieved her highest position in the world rankings with 16th place. At the Australian Open as well as in Miami she reached the round of 16, in Eastbourne and Tokyo , where she was able to land another victory against a top 10 player in the second round with Johanna Konta , she advanced to the quarter-finals. In 2019, Strýcová's individual results became increasingly inconsistent. At the end of the season, she had eleven first-round defeats and four semi-finals, two of which she won at smaller WTA tournaments in Istanbul and Prague . But once again she had her best results on grass, where she first made it into the last four in Birmingham . The 33-year-old celebrated the greatest success of her career when she reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon . After she was able to record her tenth top 10 success in the third round against Kiki Bertens , she prevailed against Elise Mertens and Johanna Konta before she was beaten by Serena Williams in the semifinals . Thanks to the world ranking points achieved in London, she finished a season in the top 50 of the individual rankings for the sixth time in a row in 2019.

In doubles, Strýcová formed a solid pairing with Hsieh Su-wei in 2019. After winning tournaments in Dubai , Madrid and Birmingham , she won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon after winning the final over Gabriela Dabrowski and Xu Yifan . On July 15, 2019, Strýcová reached number one in the double world rankings as the 43rd player and held this position for twelve weeks before being replaced by Kristina Mladenovic in October . Although they lost to Mladenovic and Tímea Babos in the final of the WTA Championships 2019 , Strýcová returned to the top of the world rankings between October 2019 and February 2020 and was number one for a total of 27 weeks. Before the 2020 season end due to corona , Hsieh and Strýcová won three more titles in Brisbane , Dubai and Doha . Fed Cup

In 2002 Strýcová made her debut for the Czech Fed Cup team in a 5-0 win against Canada . Since then, she has contested 33 singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win 22 (individual balance 11: 7). Between 2011 and 2018, she won the cup with the Czech team six times, with two appearances in the final. In 2015 , she won the 3-2 final against Russia in the decisive double with Karolína Plíšková against Anastassija Pawljutschenkowa and Jelena Wesnina in three sets. In the 2016 final , she made a significant contribution to winning the title by winning the singles against Alizé Cornet and doubles with Plíšková against Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia .

In 2000 she won the Junior Fed Cup together with Petra Cetkovská and Ema Janasková . In the final they beat the team from Hungary 2-1.

With the TC Blau-Weiss Bocholt she became German team champion in 2012 and 2013 .

From 2006 to 2015 Barbora Strýcová was married to the German tennis coach Jakub Záhlava (now: Herm-Záhlava), who was born in Czechoslovakia; during this time she appeared under the double name Záhlavová-Strýcová.
