In the quarterfinals she was defeated by her compatriot Nicole Vaidišová with 1: 6, 4: 6.

At the "Open Gaz" in Paris , Šafářová moved into the final after victories over Nicole Vaidišová, Swetlana Kuznetsova and number 1 seeded Justine Henin , in which they defeated Nadja Petrowa 6: 4, 1: 6, 4: 6 had to.

At the French Open in 2007, she won again in the third round (6: 3, 7: 6) over Amélie Mauresmo, before losing her round of 16 against Anna Tschakwetadze . At Wimbledon , she was eliminated in the third round against Jelena Janković .

In 2008 she took part in the Olympic Games in Beijing for the Czech team , both in singles and doubles . She lost her round of 16 with 5: 7 and 4: 6 against Sybille Bammer , in doubles the end came in round one. At the WTA tournament in Forest Hills , she was able to repeat her success from 2005; she won the final against Peng Shuai 6: 4 and 6: 2.

In 2009 she reached the final of the Bell Challenge in Québec, which she lost to Melinda Czink 6: 4, 3: 6 and 5: 7. She also reached a final in 2010, that of the Open GDF Suez ; she lost to Jelena Dementjewa 7: 6, 5 , 1: 6 and 4: 6.

On June 12, 2011, she lost to defending champion Caroline Wozniacki in the final in Copenhagen at their home tournament in two straight sets. With the Czech team , for which she has been playing since 2004, she won the Fed Cup on November 6th in Moscow with a 3-2 final victory over Russia.

In April 2012 she achieved her first WTA tournament victory in doubles, when she defeated the duo Medina Garrigues / Schwedowa in Charleston at the side of Anastassija Pavlyuchenkova . At the end of the season she won the Fed Cup for the second time .

In 2013 she improved with good results, including the third WTA title in Madrid and her first quarter-finals in Roland Garros, in the double world rankings in 17th place. On the side of Pavlyuchenkova, she also made her first round of 16 at the US Open . In September, after a drought of over five years, she won an individual title on the tour again when she defeated Marina Eraković in the Québec final.

In 2014, as in the previous year, she was in the quarter-finals of the doubles competition at the Australian Open . With that she climbed to 15th place in the double world rankings - a new personal record. Also in Wimbledon she moved into the quarterfinals in doubles; in individual she even reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, in which she had to admit defeat 6: 7 6 , 1: 6 to the later title winner Petra Kvitová . On September 8th, she also set a new record in the WTA ranking with 14th place. In early November she won her third Fed Cup title. The Czech team defeated the German Fed Cup team 3-1 in the final in Prague .

In 2015 she finally won her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open ; In the final of the doubles competition, she and her new partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands defeated Chan Yung-jan and Zheng Jie in straight sets . With her sixth individual title (final victory in Doha over Asaranka), she improved to position 11 in the WTA world rankings. At the French Open , she was able to defeat Marija Sharapova for the first time in the second round , who was the defending champion in position 2. After another victory (over Ana Ivanović ; 7: 5, 7: 5) she finally reached her first Grand Slam final in singles, which she lost to Serena Williams in three sets. And in doubles, she won her second Grand Slam title in Paris together with Mattek-Sands.

A protracted virus infection delayed her start to the 2016 season. She missed the Australian Open and did not join the WTA Tour until the end of February in Doha . On April 30, she won the WTA tournament in Prague with a 3-6, 6-1 and 6-4 final win over Samantha Stosur .

After the Australian Open 2019 , she actually wanted to end her career. Because of a tendon problem in her wrist, she was unable to take part in the tournament. She then planned to end her career at the WTA tournament in Prague at the end of April. But she played her last game in doubles at the French Open on May 29, 2019.

Personal

Lucie Šafářová was in a relationship with the Czech tennis player Tomáš Berdych until 2011 .
