Serena Jameka Williams (born September 26, 1981 in Saginaw , Michigan ) is an American tennis player .
In terms of Grand Slam successes in singles, she is the most successful tennis player of the so-called Open Era since 1968. In her career, she has won 23 Grand Slam tournaments in singles, 14 in doubles and two in mixed. Besides Steffi Graf and Margaret Court, Williams is the only player who has won all four Grand Slam tournaments in a row twice (2002/03 and 2014/15). However, in contrast to Graf and Court, she only managed a so-called 'fake Grand Slam', i.e. H. the four consecutive Grand Slam tournaments were not won in one calendar year. She is also one of only three players who have won at least three times in every Grand Slam tournament. In 2012 she won Olympic gold in singles; She won three more gold medals in the years 2000, 2008 and 2012 alongside her older sister Venus Williams in doubles. Williams finished a season in first place in the tennis world rankings five times, six times she was named Player of the Year by the ITF .
Besides Martina Hingis, she is the only tennis player to have won the five most important awards of the WTA . In 2015 she received the world's three most important sports media awards from the Associated Press ( Athlete of the Year ), L'Équipe ( World Sportsman of the Year ) and Sports Illustrated ( Sportsman of the Year ). Williams has also earned the highest total career prize money of any tennis player with over 90 million US dollars to date. Between June 2014 and June 2015, she was the athlete with the second highest income after Marija Sharapova with 24.6 million US dollars ; of this, $ 11.6 million was prize money and approximately $ 13 million was advertising fees and other income.
Career
As children, the Williams sisters moved with their parents to Compton , near Los Angeles . Venus and Serena Williams trained there and had success in tennis during their school days. In 1991 Serena was placed by her father Richard in the tennis school run by Rick Macci , who had coached Jennifer Capriati and Mary Pierce . The family moved to West Palm Beach .
Career
Beginning of professional career (1995–1998)
In October 1995, Serena Williams began her professional career at the age of 14 with the qualifying round at the Canadian Open in Québec, where she lost her first match with 1: 6, 1: 6. It wasn't until March 1997 that she made another attempt at a professional tournament, but failed again in Indian Wells in the first round of qualification. In November 1997 she had her breakthrough in Chicago when she successively defeated the top ten players Mary Pierce and Monica Seles and only eliminated in the semifinals. This was the first time she made it into the top 100 of the WTA world rankings . She finished the season in 99th place.
In 1998 she took part in all four Grand Slam tournaments for the first time. She achieved her best performance at the French Open , where she said goodbye in the round of 16 with a three-set defeat against the eventual winner Arantxa Sánchez Vicario . Her seasonal performances in doubles and mixed caused more sensation. So she won her first two tournaments in the doubles competition at the side of her sister. In mixed she even reached the finals in three Grand Slam tournaments. If the final at the French Open at the side of Luis Lobo was still lost, she could celebrate the tournament victory with Max Mirny in Wimbledon and at the US Open . To date, these are their only titles in the mixed competition. With a total of six quarter-finals in the course of the season, Williams finished the season in 20th place in the singles and 36th place in the world rankings.
First Grand Slam success and establishment as a top ten player (1999-2001)
The 1999 season should bring her her first major individual successes. She had her first tournament success in February when she won the title in Paris . A month later she succeeded in the next one at the somewhat larger tournament in Indian Wells, when she defeated Steffi Graf in three sets in the final. After a rather mixed clay court season and an injury, she returned to the tour in Los Angeles and won the third title of the season. But the US Open was even more successful . There she beat the top 5 players Lindsay Davenport and Monica Seles and reached her first final at a Grand Slam tournament. In the final she met the world number one Martina Hingis , who she defeated 6: 3, 7: 6 and thus made her first individual title in a Grand Slam tournament perfect. In doubles, she secured her second major success there, after she had already won the French Open together with her sister Venus . At the end of the season she won her fifth title of the season at the Grand Slam Cup in Munich and also contributed a double victory against Russia to win the US Fed Cup . She finished the season in 4th place in the world rankings, in doubles three season titles were enough to finish 10th.
The 2000 season brought Williams three more tournament victories and the final establishment in the top ten. The really big successes in the Grand Slam tournaments were denied her. She came furthest at Wimbledon , where she had to admit defeat to her sister Venus in the semi-finals. So she lost two places in the ranking compared to the previous year and ended the season in 6th position. She was more successful in doubles; With Venus she not only won the doubles competition at Wimbledon for the first time, but also the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Sydney in September . The Williams sisters were able to win the final against the Dutch representatives 6: 1, 6: 1.
2001 was similarly successful. Williams was able to win three tournaments again, including the WTA Tour Championships at the end of the season for the first time . After four quarterfinal defeats in a row at Grand Slam level, she reached the final at the US Open for the second time. For the first time in the Open Era, Venus and Serena Williams, two sisters, met in a major final. The older sister got the upper hand with 6: 2, 6: 4. She was successful again in doubles; The Williams sisters also achieved success at the Australian Open . This made them the tenth women's doubles in tennis history to have won all four major titles at least once.
Jump to the top of the world and the "Serena Slam" (2002–2003)
The 2002 season was one of the most successful of her entire career. The year started with a setback when she missed the Australian Open due to an injury. In late February she made her comeback and won both tournaments in Scottsdale and Miami . In doing so, she successively defeated the players on position 3, 2 and 1 in the world rankings. The clay court season was even more successful, she was able to celebrate her third title of the season in Rome and move into the final of the French Open . The opponent there was her sister, against whom she prevailed 7: 5, 6: 3 and thus won her second Grand Slam tournament more than two years after her first triumph at the US Open. With a winning streak of 12 games behind her, she went to Wimbledon and played her way to the final without losing a set. There she defeated Venus 7: 6, 6: 3 this time - her first single success on the Wimbledon lawn, on which the sisters also secured their second joint double title. With this, Serena Williams was ranked number 1 for the first time on July 8th, 2002. Her winning streak ended after 21 games in the quarterfinals of Los Angeles; At the US Open , however, she played her way into the final without losing a set, in which she was able to defeat her sister again. To win three Grand Slam tournaments in a row in one season, that Steffi Graf was most recently in 1996 succeeded. At the end of the season, Williams started a new winning streak, which came to an end after 18 games in the final of the WTA Championships , which they lost to Kim Clijsters . With a total of eight season titles and a match balance of 56: 5, she ended a season in first place for the first time.
At the Australian Open in 2003 she wanted to go down in history as the fifth player to win all four Grand Slam tournaments in a row. After she had won her last two major tournaments without losing a set, she was challenged in Melbourne in round one by Émilie Loit over three sets. She then reached the semi-finals without any problems, in which she was able to turn a 1: 5 deficit against Clijsters in the decisive set. The final opponent was again Venus, against whom she also prevailed in three sets. With this, Serena Williams had won the fake Grand Slam , which journalists and herself referred to as the "Serena Slam". She was also successful in doubles (with her sister) in Melbourne - it would be her last major success in this discipline for the next five years. She built her winning streak in the coming weeks and months through tournament successes in Paris and Miami to 21 games, before she suffered her first defeat in 2003 in the Charleston final against Justine Henin . The clay court season was not quite as successful; in the semifinals of the French Open she lost again to Henin and had to accept a defeat for the first time at the Grand Slam level after 33 victories in a row. But at Wimbledon she achieved her sixth major success with a 4: 6, 6: 4 and 6: 2 final victory over her sister. It was her last match of the year, though; a knee operation forced her to take a longer break, because of which she also lost the top position in the world rankings in August 2003 after around 13 months. She finished the season in third place after only seven tournaments.
Changeable results, injuries and crashes in the world rankings (2004-2006)
After an eight-month tournament break, Serena Williams made her comeback at the Tier I tournament in Miami in March 2004, which she won immediately. There were no further tournament victories at first. At the French Open she had to admit defeat to Jennifer Capriati in the quarterfinals ; so she was eliminated after seven appearances in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time before the semifinals. At Wimbledon , on the other hand, she made her third finals in a row, but against 17-year-old Maria Sharapova she missed the title hat-trick. Serena Williams fell out of the top ten in the world rankings for the first time since 1999. At the US Open, she lost again to Capriati in the quarterfinals. Thanks to her second title of the season in Beijing she was qualified for the WTA Championships, where she reached the final, but lost again to Sharapova. She finished the season in 7th place in the ranking.
The 2005 season started with great success. In the semifinals of the Australian Open she fended off three match points from Sharapova and in the final against Lindsay Davenport she was still able to win the game despite losing the first set and thus celebrate her seventh Grand Slam success in singles. However, it should remain her only title of the season. Until Wimbledon she only took part in five other tournaments; she had to give up several times or give up completely. She also missed the French Open due to an injury. At Wimbledon, Williams lost to Jill Craybas in the third round . She had not been eliminated from a Grand Slam tournament that early for over six years ( French Open 1999 ). After three more early defeats, including in the second round of the US Open against her sister, she finished the season in 11th position and thus outside the top ten for the first time since 1998.
The 2006 season should see an even more pronounced slide . In her title defense in Melbourne she failed in the third round to Daniela Hantuchová . It was their last match for around six months. The reason for the break of several months was officially given as persistent injury problems. It was later revealed that Williams suffered from depression during this period and her return was long uncertain. As number 139 in the world, she finally made her comeback in Cincinnati , where she achieved a respectable result with the semi-finals. Also at the tournament in Los Angeles a few weeks later, she reached the semifinals, before ending the season prematurely after losing the last 16 at the US Open . For the first time since 1998 she ended a season without a tournament win, at the end of the year she landed with 95th place just within the top 100 of the world rankings.
Successful comeback and return to the top (2007–2009)
Williams started the 2007 season with new motivation . In public, however, she was often accused of a lack of fitness and given little chance of playing a serious role at the Australian Open . Her sponsor Nike also apparently had doubts, because he announced that in the event of an early departure in Melbourne, her contract would not be extended. Williams fought her way to the final - both in the third round against Nadja Petrowa and in the quarter-finals against Shahar Peer she was able to avert the elimination, although both competitors served to win the match. In the final she met Sharapova, number two in the world, who was clearly put in their place by Williams 6: 1, 6: 2. She also won her next tournament in Miami. It should remain the only title in 2007, as it was repeatedly thrown back by minor injuries. In the remaining Grand Slam tournaments she was eliminated in the quarterfinals - each time against Justine Henin, who won two of the tournaments. Williams finally finished the season at number 7 in the world rankings.
The 2008 season should bring Williams back to the top in the world rankings. Although she was unable to defend her title at the Australian Open , she lost the quarter-finals in a major tournament for the fourth time in a row. However, she won consecutive tournaments in Bangalore , Miami and Charleston . Their winning streak of 17 games finally ended in Berlin against Dinara Safina . After a disappointing third round in Roland Garros , she played her way into the Wimbledon final for the fourth time without losing a set , which she lost to Venus 5: 7, 4: 6. Together with her sister, however, she celebrated her first joint title win in over five years in the doubles competition. The expectations of the Williams sisters at the Olympic Games in Beijing were correspondingly high . Serena was eliminated there in the quarterfinals, but she won the title again alongside her sister, eight years after her first gold medal in Sydney. The successful revenge for the lost Wimbledon final against Venus then succeeded Serena in the quarterfinals of the US Open , where she was able to prevail 7: 6, 7: 6. She also won the last two games there and won the tournament for the third time since 1999 and 2002. It was the first time since 2003 that she was back in first place in the world rankings, but she ended the 2008 season in second place.
At the beginning of 2009 , after 2003, 2005 and 2007, she won her fourth title at the Australian Open . On the way to her 10th Grand Slam success, she only gave a sentence in the quarterfinals against Svetlana Kuznetsova . By winning the title, she was number 1 again for a few weeks. In the next few months, however, she did not succeed in any further tournament success, during the clay court season she even received three first round defeats in a row. At the French Open , she failed in a close quarterfinal match to Kuznetsova before moving back into the final at Wimbledon . Unlike in the previous year, this time she was able to prevail against sister Venus 7: 6, 6: 2. For the first time since 2003 she was able to win two major titles in one season. She was also successful in the doubles competition, together with Venus she was able to defend a double title at the Grand Slam level for the first time - her second major success in doubles this season. The title defense at the US Open then failed in the semifinals against Kim Clijsters . At match point for Clijsters, Williams received a penalty point after she was dissatisfied with a referee decision and verbally attacked the linesman.
In doubles, however, it was enough to win the title, apart from the French Open, Serena and Venus Williams had won all Grand Slam tournaments together in 2009. At the end of the season Serena was able to celebrate her third title of the season when she won the WTA Championships for the second time. This also secured her the top position in the world rankings; for the second time after 2002 she finished a season as number 1, also in position 2 in the double world rankings.
Career-threatening injury and renewed comeback (2010–2011)
At the beginning of the 2010 season she was able to defend her title at the Australian Open . On the way to her 12th Grand Slam title (which made her level with Billie Jean King and Suzanne Lenglen ), she beat Justine Henin in the final . An injury made tournament starts in the following months impossible, only in May in Rome Williams returned to the WTA Tour. In the meantime, she had spent her 100th week at the top of the world rankings, as the seventh player in history. Once again Williams did not win the title in the clay court season, but won the French Open in doubles alongside her sister - the second major success in doubles this season and the fourth in a row, a so-called fake Grand Slam. Williams also took the lead in the double world rankings and was only the sixth player in history to top the single and double world rankings at the same time. At Wimbledon she lived up to her favorite position when she accepted the trophy for the individual title for the fourth time. During the entire tournament, she had not lost a set and had clearly put Vera Swonaryova in her place in the final. It would be their last official match for almost a full year. It was reported that Williams stepped into a shard of glass while visiting a restaurant a few days after winning the Wimbledon title. She sustained a foot injury that got worse during a show match against Kim Clijsters . Two operations were the result, participation in further tournaments was impossible. The question even arose whether she would come back on tour at all.
In late February 2011, Williams had to undergo another operation after a blood clot formed in his lungs from treating his injured foot. In March she returned to the training ground, in June she made her comeback on the tour at the lawn tournament in Eastbourne . Only listed at position 26 in the ranking list, she had to admit defeat in the second round of the tournament. She came a little further at Wimbledon , where the chance for the title hat-trick in the round of 16 against Marion Bartoli ended. In preparation for the US Open, Williams then built on past successes; she decided the tournaments in Stanford and Toronto for themselves. Once again acted as a co-favorite, she played her way into the fifth US Open final of her career without losing a set. In the final, however, she had to accept a very clear 2: 6, 3: 6 defeat against Samantha Stosur . It was her last tournament of the season, which she finished 12th in the world rankings after two tournament victories in six participations.
Olympic victory and oldest number 1 in tennis history (2012-2013)
The 2012 season began for Williams with a round of 16 defeat at the Australian Open . She was last eliminated that early in 2006 at the first major tournament of the season. In the clay court season she then won in Charleston and Madrid - her first tournament successes on this surface in around four years. Accordingly, she calculated her chances at the French Open , the only Grand Slam tournament that she had been able to win once. But she failed in the opening match, for the first time in her career in a Grand Slam tournament. The defeat in Paris, however, should remain the last setback for the time being. She won her fifth individual title at Wimbledon and was also able to triumph in doubles. A month later she was back on the pitch at Wimbledon, this time as part of the Olympic Games . In the individual competition, Williams moved into the final and beat Marija Sharapova there with a clear 6: 0, 6: 1. She was also successful with her sister in the doubles competition. The Williams sisters won their third Olympic gold medal in doubles after 2000 and 2008. After 19 wins, their streak ended in the quarterfinals of Cincinnati . At the US Open , she played her way into a final against world number one Wiktoryja Asaranka without losing a set . For the first time in the course of the tournament, Williams was seriously challenged, but in the end she was able to celebrate her 15th Grand Slam success when she prevailed 6: 2, 2: 6 and 7: 5. At the WTA Tour Championships , after Wimbledon, the US Open and the Olympic tennis tournament, she celebrated her fourth major success of the season and the third time the title at the year-end tournament. Although they dominated the second half of the season with a match record of 31: 1, the results were not enough to return to the top of the world rankings at the end of the season. She finished the season in third place.
The winning streak she brought with her from the 2012 season ended in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open . In February 2013, Williams passed the semi-finals at the tournament in Doha to return to the top of the world rankings. At 31, she was the oldest player in tennis history to ever take this position. In the following months she cemented this position with tournament victories in Miami , Charleston , Madrid and Rome . So she entered the French Open with a winning streak of 24 games . With only one set loss, Williams reached the final again, eleven years after her only title win in Paris in 2002. There she beat the world number two Maria Sharapova and received her second trophy at the French Open. Never before in the history of the tournament had a player been able to win the individual title again after such a long break. In addition, Williams became only the fifth player to have won all four Grand Slam tournaments at least twice. Her winning streak, which had now grown to over 30 games and thus the longest of her career, finally broke in the round of 16 at Wimbledon ; their title defense ended with a defeat against Sabine Lisicki. On the way to the US Open , Williams increased her account of season titles through successes in Bastad and Toronto to eight, setting her personal best from the 2002 season. In New York she played her way to the final without losing a set and met Viktoria Asaranka there, as in the previous year. Once again the world number one prevailed and, in addition to her 17th Grand Slam success, she successfully defended her title at the US Open for the first time. At the end of the season she won her tenth title of the season in Beijing and also defended the title at the WTA Tour Championships for the first time in her career. After the 2: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 0 successes against Li Na , she finished the season with a big lead in first place in the world rankings. With 13 finals, 11 tournament wins and a total of 78 match successes, Williams set a number of new career records in 2013.
Chasing records and the second "Serena Slam" (2014-2015)
The 2014 opened Williams with a tournament victory in Brisbane . At the subsequent Australian Open , however, she failed in the round of 16. In the following weeks and months she celebrated further tournament successes in Miami and Rome . The title defense in Roland Garros , however, ended in the second round against Garbiñe Muguruza . Williams also failed early at Wimbledon , this time in the third round against Alizé Cornet . Before the US Open , she won the premier tournament in Cincinnati and also posted her 200th week at the top of the world rankings. For the fourth time in a row she then moved into the final at the US Open. There she defeated Caroline Wozniacki 6: 3, 6: 3 and celebrated her 18th Grand Slam success. So she drew level with Martina Navrátilová and Chris Evert in the all-time winner list . Williams did not win another tournament until the end of the season in Singapore. At the WTA Tour Championships , her direct rival for the top spot, Marija Sharapova, failed in the group stage. As a result, Williams not only successfully defended the top position at the end of the year for the first time in her career, she was also the first player since Steffi Graf in 1996 who was able to defend this position for an entire season without interruption. Williams won the tournament after starting difficulties with a final victory over Simona Halep and thus secured the trophy at the Tour Championships for the third time in a row.
At the start of the 2015 season, Williams spent her 100th straight week at the top of the world rankings. Only three other players had previously achieved this. At the Australian Open , she reached the final for the first time in five years. There she met the world number two Marija Sharapova, against whom she prevailed with 6: 3, 7: 6. With her 19th major title she climbed to number 3 on the all-time best list, along with Helen Wills Moody ; only Margaret Court (24) and Steffi Graf (22) won more individual Grand Slam titles. On the way to the French Open, Williams won the Miami tournament for the eighth time. In Roland Garros she then reached the final, although she had to give up the first set in four matches. In the final she defeated Lucie Šafářová 6: 3, 6: 7 and 6: 2 and thus secured the title at the French Open for the third time. As a result, she was only the third player to reach the mark of 20 individual titles in Grand Slam tournaments. Three weeks later, Williams competed at Wimbledon, with a series of 21 match successes at Grand Slam tournaments behind him. On the way to her eighth Wimbledon final, she defeated Sharapova in the semifinals. In the final, she won against Garbiñe Muguruza 6: 4, 6: 4 and, after the US Open 2014, the Australian Open 2015 and the French Open 2015, her fourth major tournament in a row, so she managed a so-called "fake" Grand Slam. She had already succeeded in doing this in 2002/03 - Williams is the only player alongside Steffi Graf to have won a “real” or “fake” Grand Slam twice in her career. In addition, at 33 years and 288 days, she is now the oldest single Grand Slam winner of the Open Era . Shortly before the US Open , she won her fifth title of the season in Cincinnati. In New York, their streak of success at Grand Slam tournaments ended after 33 games in a row; she was defeated by Roberta Vinci in a hard-fought semi-final game with 6: 2, 4: 6 and 4: 6. She also missed the opportunity to win the Grand Slam as the fourth player in individual. In October, Williams announced that she would end the 2015 season prematurely due to an injury and, among other things, would not defend her title at the WTA Tour Championships. Nevertheless, she finished the season with a clear lead in first place in the world rankings, for the third time in a row and for the fifth time. At the end of 2015, Williams was voted World Sportswoman of the Year (“Championne des championnes monde”) for the third time by the French sports newspaper L'Équipe .
Level with Steffi Graf, Olympic defeats and loss of world rankings (2016)
In 2016, the top seeded Williams made it into the individual finals of the Australian Open for the seventh time after undisputed victories over Marija Sharapowa and Agnieszka Radwańska . If she hadn't given a single set in the tournament so far, she had to admit defeat 4: 6, 6: 3, 4: 6 after three hard-fought sets by number 7 seeded Germans Angelique Kerber . Until mid-May, Williams only appeared in three other tournaments. In Indian Wells she had to admit defeat in the final before she won her first title of the season in Rome, the 70th title of her career. Williams suffered from an adductor injury at the French Open . After difficult victories over the unseeded players Julija Putinzewa from Kazakhstan (quarter-finals) and Kiki Bertens from the Netherlands (semi-finals), she nevertheless reached the final against Garbiñe Muguruza , which she lost to the Spaniard in two sets 5: 7, 4: 6. At Wimbledon , Williams reached the final for the ninth time in her career. As at the Australian Open, she met Angelique Kerber there, against whom she prevailed 7: 5, 6: 3 this time. With her seventh Wimbledon title, she also set Steffi Graf's Open Era record with 22 Grand Slam titles. Only Margaret Court (24) has won more individual titles in major tournaments in tennis history. The Williams sisters were also successful in the doubles competition at Wimbledon. The sixth double success at Wimbledon was also the first success in this discipline for Serena in four years. During the tournament, Williams also spent her 300th week at the top of the world rankings. Only Steffi Graf (377 weeks) and Martina Navratilova (332 weeks) were placed there longer.
At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , Williams competed in singles and doubles with her sister Venus, as in the games four years earlier, but failed to defend their titles early on. In the singles she was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Ukrainian Elina Switolina , No. 15 on the seeding list, in two sets (4: 6, 3: 6). In the women's doubles, the top seeded Williams sisters were defeated in the first round by the unseeded Czech pairing Lucie Šafářová and Barbora Strýcová (3: 6, 4: 6), who won the bronze medal in the end.
Due to the small number of tournament participations, Williams faced losing the world rankings for the first time in more than three years before the 2016 US Open . In fact, the three pursuers Angelique Kerber (No. 2), Garbiñe Muguruza (No. 3) and Agnieszka Radwańska (No. 4) had the opportunity to challenge her for the lead at the tournament . While Muguruza and Radwańska failed early, Kerber reached the final. Williams himself failed in the semifinals to Karolína Plíšková in two sets (2: 6, 6: 7) and lost the world rankings again after 186 weeks. With that she had set the record of Steffi Graf, who had also topped the world rankings for 186 weeks in a row from 1987 to 1991.
As in the previous year, Williams ended her season prematurely after losing at the US Open. After only eight tournaments and two wins this season, she finished the season in second place in the world rankings.
Seventh success at the Australian Open, pregnancy break and return to the tour (2017-2018)
Williams started the 2017 season with a last 16 defeat at the tournament in Auckland . At the Australian Open , she then played her way into her third final in a row without losing a set. For the first time since Wimbledon 2009, the Williams sisters met there again in a Grand Slam final. Serena prevailed against her older sister 6-4, 6-4 and celebrated her seventh individual title in Melbourne. Overall, it was her 23rd Grand Slam title, with which she was missing only one success to Margaret Court's record. Since the world number one Angelique Kerber was eliminated in the round of 16 of the tournament, Williams also regained number 1 in the world rankings. After the tournament she was out for several months before announcing her pregnancy on April 19 and declaring the season prematurely ended.
By not participating in the Australian Open 2018 , Serena Williams lost the last 2,000 points in the computer ranking of the world rankings and after more than 20 years, where she was first listed as No. 453 from October 20, 1997, from January 29, 2018 no longer listed in this. In this context, another discussion arose as to how the World Association WTA deals with pregnancies of its players with regard to the ranking and the possibilities of a comeback.
In Indian Wells, Williams celebrated her comeback on the WTA Tour in March. In her first match she defeated Sarina Dijas 7: 5, 6: 3. With another win she returned to the top 500 in the world rankings before she was eliminated in the third round against her sister Venus. Two months later, Williams played her first Grand Slam tournament at the French Open since she returned to the tour. After three wins, she had to cancel her round of 16 match against Marija Sharapova due to an injury. Although she was placed before the tournament at No. 181, Williams was in Wimbledon seeding list classified due to their past performance on position 25th She reached the final there again, but had to admit defeat Angelique Kerber 3: 6 and 3: 6. Against Johanna Konta on July 31, 2018, Williams conceded 6-1 and 6-0 in San José, the highest defeat in her professional career since 1995. Williams also reached the final of the last Grand Slam tournament of the season, the US Open . In this she succumbed to Naomi Osaka in two sentences .
Conduct on the field and penalties
In the semifinals of the 2009 US Open against Kim Clijsters, Williams attacked a line judge who had ruled on foot faults when serving, saying, “By God, I swear I'll put one of those damn balls down your throat. I swear it. ”Williams had previously received a warning after smashing her bat. According to the linesman, Williams also threatened to kill her, which she denied. Although many experts had spoken out in favor of a ban, Williams was only fined $ 10,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct. Stacey Allaster, the president of the women's professional tennis organization WTA, described Williams' behavior as unacceptable “No professional should be allowed to behave like this without being punished. In her role as a role model, she must also see that her reaction was unsustainable. ”After this freak out, Williams was put under surveillance for two years, and in the event of another gross violation, a suspension for the US Open was considered.
In the final of the US Open 2011 against Samantha Stosur, another decision against Willams led to an outburst of rage against the referee: “Don't look at me, I'm not kidding. You have completely lost control. You are a hater and just plain unattractive inside. "
In her defeat in the Grand Slam final at the 2018 US Open, Serena Williams caused another scandal when she received three warnings from the referee. The first warning was given for illegal coaching from the stands, after the second for a smashed racket, the referee deducted points. After rabble and threats against the chair referee, with Williams insulting the referee as a “thief” and “liar”, the third warning resulted in a loss of 3: 5 in the second set without a fight. She was fined $ 17,000 for breaking the rules, including 10,000 for insulting referees, 4,000 for coaching and 3,000 for racket abuse. The fine was deducted from the $ 1.85 million Williams received for entering the finals. All warnings were compliant, but Williams claimed at the press conference that they were sexist. She is here to "fight for women's rights and equal treatment." The trade press described Williams' behavior in the final as a scandalous and "unworthy performance".
