Alison Riske (born July 3, 1990 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ), also known as Alison Riske-Amritraj after her wedding , is an American tennis player .

Career

Riske, who started playing tennis at the age of three, entered the US Open with a wildcard in 2007 and was eliminated in the second round. In 2009 she received a tennis scholarship to Vanderbilt University , but she decided to pursue a professional career due to good results on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour . In the same year, Riske started again with a wildcard in the qualifying tournaments in New York and on the WTA Tour in Los Angeles . In Troy , she then won her first professional title in a tournament in the $ 50,000 category.

In 2010, Riske drew attention to herself when, as a qualifier in her first appearance in the main draw of a WTA tournament in Nottingham , she immediately advanced to the semi-finals and was only eliminated there in three sets against Marija Sharapova . Because of this success, she was then allowed to debut at Wimbledon with a wildcard in the main round of a Grand Slam tournament, but lost to Yanina Wickmayer at the start . At the end of the year she started a streak of 15 straight wins on the ITF tour, winning two titles in the $ 50,000 category in Saint-Raphaël and Joué-lès-Tours and the $ 75,000 category tournament in Barnstaple . In 2011, she again achieved her best result on the WTA Tour on grass in Birmingham with the quarter-finals. After successfully defending her title in Joué-lès-Tours, she was able to win another ITF title in the $ 50,000 category in Nantes , but she could not win a single match in her six appearances in qualifying and in the main draw of North American WTA tournaments. At the start of the 2012 season, Riske made the first jump into the main round at the Australian Open , but was eliminated in the first round against Urszula Radwańska .

It was not until 2013 that Riske was able to achieve a good result on the WTA Tour by reaching the semi-finals in Birmingham. At Wimbledon , where she was back in the main draw with a wildcard after 2011, she then made it into the third round for the first time, in which she was defeated by Kaia Kanepi . Then Riske, who reached the second round in New Haven and made it to the round of 16 of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the US Open after her first Top 10 win ever against Petra Kvitová , also achieved the first strong results in front of a home crowd and thus the Entry into the top 100 of the tennis world rankings . At the beginning of the 2014 season, Riske also scored the third round at the Australian Open for the first time and repeated this result at Wimbledon . At the end of an inconsistent season, she was able to move into the round of 16 in Wuhan before she won her first WTA title in Tianjin after a final victory over Belinda Bencic and ended the year in the top 50 in the ranking for the first time. After a total of 14 first round defeats and only two WTA semi-finals in Hobart and Nottingham, she fell back significantly in the world rankings in the 2015 season.

At the beginning of 2016, Riske presented herself again and came into the final in Shenzhen at the start of the season, in which she had to admit defeat to the top seeded Agnieszka Radwańska . It was only at the beginning of the lawn season that she was heard from again when she first won an ITF tournament in the $ 50,000 category in Eastbourne and then reached her second season finale in Nottingham , which she lost to Karolína Plíšková . Then she reached the semifinals in Stanford , where she failed to Venus Williams , and ended the season in Tianjin , where she reached the final after her third top 10 win against Svetlana Kuznetsova as in the previous year, but this time lost to Peng Shuai . Nevertheless, she finished the 2016 season as the second of her career in the top 100, although, as in 2015, she was eliminated in the first round of all four Grand Slam appearances. Riske started the year in 2017 with a final in Shenzhen , where she lost to Kateřina Siniaková , and then ended her series of eight Grand Slam defeats in a row by moving into the third round in Melbourne . She also made it into the third round at Wimbledon , but the season, which she ended with nine defeats in the last ten games, was otherwise without further highlights.

The period of weaker results dragged on well into the 2018 season, when she surprisingly scored her first WTA final on clay in Nuremberg , in which she failed to Johanna Larsson . On grass she then won her biggest title since 2014 at a tournament in the $ 100,000 category in Surbiton and, back on the WTA Tour, she reached the quarter-finals in both 's-Hertogenbosch and Mallorca . With another quarter-final participation in Tokyo , in which she narrowly failed to the eventual winner Karolína Plíšková, Riske fought her way back into the top 50 of the world rankings at the end of the season.

After the winter break, she was in the final for the third time in Shenzhen , but was unable to win the title again after losing to Aryna Sabalenka . At the Australian Open , she then achieved her first GRand Slam semi-final in the doubles competition alongside Jennifer Brady , where she first had to admit defeat to Tímea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic, who were in second place. Then she reached the round of 16 in Dubai , but could not save her good form into the clay court season, on which she was without a win. It went all the better for Riske on the pitch, as she not only successfully defended her title in Surbiton , but also celebrated her second WTA tournament victory in 's-Hertogenbosch after her sixth top 10 win in the final against Kiki Bertens . In Wimbledon Riske defeated the world number leader Ashleigh Barty and moved into the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, in which she was only stopped by Serena Williams . Towards the end of the season she came in Wuhan after victories against Elina Switolina and Petra Kvitová in her first final of the Premier 5 category, that she lost to defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in two sets. As a result, Riske was able to qualify for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai for the first time in 2019 , where after two defeats against Sofia Kenin and Karolína Muchová she was eliminated in the group stage. Nevertheless, at the end of the year she achieved her highest world ranking position to date with rank 18.

At the 2020 Australian Open, she made it to the round of 16 for the first time at the start of the new season, in which she was defeated by Ashleigh Barty.

In 2014, Riske made her debut for the United States' Fed Cup team in the 3-1 loss to Italy . Since then, she has played four singles and doubles for her country, of which she won one game in singles. At the final of the Fed Cup 2018 she represented the USA in the final against the Czech Republic and lost her match against Kateřina Siniaková in two sets in the 3-0 defeat.
