Career

Her favorite hard court player, Keys joined Chris Evert Academy in Boca Raton at the age of nine . She is one of the youngest players to ever win a match on the WTA Tour . At the age of 14, she defeated her first WTA tournament in Ponte Vedra Beach with a wildcard equipped Alla Kudrjawzewa , then the number 81 in the world, in straight sets, before the second round Nadia Petrova defeated. In the same year she made her debut on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour and won her first professional title in 2010. At the US Open , she started with a wildcard for the first time in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament and was eliminated in the first round. In 2011, she was even allowed to compete in the main draw and, after an opening win against Jill Craybas , immediately moved into the second round, in which she was defeated by Lucie Šafářová . In 2012 she won her first title at an ITF tournament in the $ 50,000 category in Saguenay, followed by another in the $ 75,000 category at the end of the season in Phoenix .

In 2013 Keys finally established himself on the WTA Tour. After she reached her first WTA quarter-finals in Sydney , in which she was defeated by Li Na , she then reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the Australian Open and failed there against Angelique Kerber . In Madrid, she subsequently moved into the main field as a lucky loser and beat a player from the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time in the first round with Li Na . In Wimbledon , she then made it into the third round and reached the round of 16 in Tokyo towards the end of the season and then her first WTA semi-final in Osaka , which she lost to Samantha Stosur . She then ended the year in the top 50 for the first time. At the start of the 2014 season Keys was in the semi-finals in Sydney , but lost again to Angelique Kerber. In an otherwise changeable season, she won her first WTA title on grass in Eastbourne after a final victory, again against Kerber.

In 2015 Keys achieved her final breakthrough on the WTA Tour at the start of the year under her new coach Lindsay Davenport at the Australian Open , when she reached the semifinals after defeating Venus Williams , in which she had to admit defeat to Serena Williams . On clay court, she achieved her second tour final in Charleston , but lost there again to Angelique Kerber. Keys also convinced at Wimbledon and advanced to the quarterfinals, where she was beaten in three sets by Agnieszka Radwańska . After she also reached the last 16 at the US Open in front of a home crowd, she moved up to the top 20 in the ranking for the first time and thus qualified for the first time for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, where she won against Zheng Saisai and lost against Venus Williams was eliminated in the group stage.

In 2016 Keys played her most consistent season so far, in which she was able to land a total of six wins against top 10 players. After another round of 16 at a Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne , she advanced to the quarter-finals for the first time in Miami , but failed again because of Angelique Kerber. That same month, Mats Wilander was introduced as her new coach; but after only eight days they separated again. Nevertheless, she came in the connection in Rome after two top 10 victories against Petra Kvitová in the second round and Garbiñe Muguruza in the semifinals in her first final in a tournament of the Premier 5 category, which she lost to Serena Williams. At both the French Open and Wimbledon she then reached the fourth round and celebrated her second career title in Birmingham after beating Barbora Strýcová in her second final of the season. After moving into the final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, which she lost to Simona Halep , Keys climbed into the top 10 in the world rankings for the first time. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro she subsequently reached the semi-finals in the individual competition , but was eliminated there by Angelique Kerber and had to admit defeat to Petra Kvitová in the following bronze match. In her fourth Grand Slam appearance of the year in New York , she reached the round of 16, followed by a quarter-finals at the end of the season in Wuhan and, after defeating Petra Kvitová, a semifinal participation in Beijing . Seventh in the world rankings, her highest ranking to date, she qualified for the first time for the WTA Championships 2016 in Singapore, where she was eliminated in the preliminary round after defeating Dominika Cibulková and losing twice to Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber.

A wrist injury forced Keys to cancel her participation in the 2017 Australian Open . Only after a second surgical procedure did she get back into shape in the summer and won her third WTA title in Stanford after beating Coco Vandeweghe in the final . The biggest success of her career so far Keys then achieved at the US Open with the entry into her first Grand Slam final, which she lost in an all-American final against Sloane Stephens . Despite the longer injury break, Keys was able to finish the season in the top 20 for the third year in a row. At the Australian Open at the beginning of the 2018 season, she reached the quarter-finals after a success over Caroline Garcia , in which she was stopped once again by Angelique Kerber. In another changeable season, Keys was in the semifinals in Charleston at the beginning of the clay court season, but she had her best results in the Grand Slam tournaments. She reached the semifinals in Paris , where she lost again to Stephens, as well as in New York , where she finally had to admit defeat to Naomi Osaka . Due to an injury to her left knee, she then had to give up in the second round in Wuhan and Beijing and withdraw her participation for the Americans in the final of the Fed Cup 2018 against the Czech Republic . Nevertheless, at the end of the year she started at the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, where after a victory over Darja Kassatkina and a loss to Wang Qiang she actually made it to the semi-finals due to the better set ratio, but could not compete there due to her knee injury.

In 2019 Keys started the new season in Melbourne with a round of 16 before she won her first title in Charleston in her second finals after 2015 with a two-set success in the final against Caroline Wozniacki . At the French Open, she then advanced to the quarter-finals, in which she was only beaten by the eventual winner Ashleigh Barty . On hard court, after a third-round success against Simona Halep and a victory in the final over Svetlana Kuznetsova, she achieved her greatest career success up to that point in Cincinnati , which was followed by another round of 16 in New York , where she lost to Elina Switolina . Also this year Keys succeeded in qualifying for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, where they failed after a loss to Zheng Saisai and a win against Petra Martić in the preliminary round. Nevertheless, she wintered in the top 20 in the ranking for the fifth time in a row.

Keys began the 2020 season in Brisbane , where she advanced to the final with a win over Petra Kvitová, but which she lost to Karolína Plíšková .

In 2014 Keys made their debut for the United States' Fed Cup team in a 3-1 loss to Italy . Since then, she has played ten singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win five (individual balance 4: 4).
