Elina Mychajliwna Switolina ( Ukrainian Еліна Михайлівна Світоліна ; born September 12, 1994 in Odessa ) is a Ukrainian tennis player .

Career

Switolina started playing tennis at the age of five and prefers grass courts. On June 6, 2010, she won the junior women's competition at the French Open when she defeated Ons Jabeur from Tunisia 6: 2, 7: 5 in the final.

She won her first ITF tournament in 2010 alongside her compatriot Kateryna Koslowa . Her first individual titles followed in 2011 at the ITF tournaments in Lagos and Istanbul.

Switolina secured her first title on the WTA Tour in November 2012 at the Challenger tournament in Pune . In La Marsa (Tunisia) and Telavi (Georgia) she had won two more ITF individual titles. In January 2013 she was successful in both singles and doubles in Eilat (Israel). This improved her to the top 100 in the WTA world rankings for the first time. In January 2014 she climbed to 38th place by advancing into the third round of the Australian Open . In July 2014 she won the hard court tournament in Baku , where she almost hit the Exactly one year earlier, she won the final against Shahar Peer , her third individual title on the tour. She won her fourth WTA title in May 2015 at the clay court tournament in Marrakech with a final victory over the Hungarian Tímea Babos .

After her final victory in Kuala Lumpur in March 2016 over Eugenie Bouchard , she climbed to 14th place in the world rankings ; after her first title win at a Premier 5 tournament in February 2017 in Dubai, she was in the top ten for the first time with place 10. With her victory at the clay court tournament in Rome , she improved to fourth place in August 2017.

Switolina has been playing for the Ukrainian Fed Cup team since 2012 , for which she has contributed ten wins in 19 games so far.

On February 11, 2016, Switolina announced that she will be strengthening her coaching team with the seven-time Grand Slam winner Justine Henin .

In 2017, Switolina finally achieved the breakthrough. After five tournament victories (in Taipei , Dubai , Istanbul , Rome and Toronto ) she was one of the world's best; from September 11th she was number 3 in the world for four weeks .
