Bianca Vanessa Andreescu (born June 16, 2000 in Mississauga , Ontario ) is a Canadian tennis player .

Life

Andreescu was born in Mississauga, a suburb of Toronto , to Romanian immigrants. When she was six years old, the family went back to Romania . A few years later they returned to Toronto, where Andreescu still lives today.

Career

Andreescu started playing tennis at the age of seven. In 2011 she joined the Canadian Tennis Association's national U14 training center. In 2014 she won the Orange Bowl in the age group up to 16 years and in 2015 in the age group up to 18 years. According to the player profile, she prefers clay courts. On ITF tournaments she won the previous five titles in singles and three in doubles to a singles title of the WTA Challenger Series .

In 2017 she qualified for the first time in the main round of a Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon . In the first round she lost to Kristína Kučová 4-6 and 3-6 .

After a disappointing 2018, Andreescu made it into the top 150 at the beginning of January 2019 when she qualified for the final of the ASB Classic in Auckland . There she lost just under three sets against Julia Görges 6: 2, 5: 7 and 1: 6. At the Australian Open 2019 , she reached the second round in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. At the end of January 2019, after her victory at the Oracle Challenger Series in Newport Beach over Jessica Pegula, she achieved her best world ranking position to date with 68th place in the singles and thus became the best-placed player in Canada in the individual world rankings before Eugenie Bouchard . Andreescu achieved her greatest success to date at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells , where she celebrated her first tournament victory on the WTA Tour at a Premier Mandatory tournament and improved to 24th in the world rankings with her final victory over Angelique Kerber . After injury interruptions, she was able to triumph in Toronto at the Rogers Cup in the same year and improve to 14th place in the individual world rankings. In September 2019 she won the final of the US Open as number 15 on the seed list against Serena Williams 6: 3 and 7: 5. This makes her the first ever Grand Slam winner to be born in the 2000s . She is also the first Canadian to celebrate a single title in a Grand Slam.

In February 2017, Andreescu played in Metepec against Venezuela for the first time for the Canadian Fed Cup team . In their Fed Cup balance sheet there are eight wins and three defeats.
