Marcela Zacarías (born March 26, 1994 in San Luis Potosí ) is a Mexican tennis player .

Career

Zacarías, who started playing tennis at the age of seven , prefers hard courts. She mainly plays on the ITF Women's Circuit , where she has won 16 tournaments in singles and 25 in doubles so far.

Zacarías played her first professional tournament in September 2008 in Celaya . After that, she only competed sporadically in professional tournaments until 2011, but reached a quarter-finals twice in a tournament endowed with US $ 10,000 and thus earned her first world ranking points.

In 2012 she played her first tournaments on the WTA Tour . She received a wildcard in February to qualify for the Whirlpool Monterrey Open , where she lost to Sun Shengnan 2: 6 and 6: 7 3 . A week later at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel , she won her first game on the WTA Tour in qualifying . She defeated Aravane Rezaï 6: 2, 3: 6 and 6: 4, but then lost in the second round to Maria João Koehler 7: 6, 5 , 4: 6 and 2: 6. After these two WTA tournaments, she was led in the world rankings for the first time . In October she won two tournaments in Mexico City and was among the top 800 in the world rankings for the first time at the end of the year.

In 2013 she received another wildcard for qualifying for the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco . She reached the second round by defeating Renata Voráčová , who had to give up at 7: 6, 5 , 4: 6 and 1: 4. In the second round, Zacarías was clearly defeated by Mariana Duque Mariño with 2: 6 and 0: 6. With her final victory at the Metepec tournament , reaching the semi-finals at the $ 25,000 tournament in Poza Rica and other good results in the first half of 2013, she was among the top 400 in the world rankings for the first time in mid-2013.

In 2014, at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco, she received a wildcard for the first time in the main draw of the individual competition of a WTA tournament. However, she could not use this and was already defeated in the first round by Julia Görges with 0: 6 and 1: 6. She also received a wildcard for the main draw for the Monterrey Open 2014 , where she lost to Aleksandra Wozniak in three sets in the first round 6: 3, 0: 6 and 1: 6. With good results in the second half of the year at the ITF Women's Circuit, she was able to maintain her position among the top 400 in the world rankings.

Zacarías achieved her greatest success to date at the beginning of 2015 when she won the ITF tournament in Cuernavaca , which is endowed with $ 25,000 . She beat Mariana Duque Mariño in the quarterfinals for the first time, a player in the Top200. She won the final 6: 3 and 6: 2 against Nina Stojanović and was then listed in the top 300 of the individual world rankings for the first time. In the subsequent WTA tournaments in Acapulco , Monterrey and Bogotá, she lost in the first round. In August 2015, she first appeared in a Grand Slam tournament . In qualifying for the US Open 2015 , she won her first round match against Richèl Hogenkamp 5: 7, 6: 2 and 6: 3, before in the second round against Ysaline Bonaventure in three sets with 5: 7, 6: 4 and 4: 6 lost. After two finals at the ITF tournaments in Monterrey and Victoria, each endowed with 50,000 US dollars, Zacarías was in the top 200 in the individual world rankings for the first time in October 2015 with position 181.

In January 2016 Zacarías competed in the qualification for the Australian Open , but already lost in the first round against Alexandra Panowa with 1: 6 and 1: 6. After a series of first round defeats, she was able to win the $ 10,000 tournament in Austin in July 2016 . In only four other tournaments in the second half of 2016, Zacarías was no longer placed in the top 500 in the individual world rankings at the end of the year.

She has been playing for the Mexican Fed Cup team since 2012 , for which she has received five nominations so far and competed in 16 FedCup matches. She was able to make 13 of her 20 matches victorious, including 11 wins in singles.
