Patricia Maria Țig (born July 27, 1994 in Caransebeş ) is a Romanian tennis player .

Career

The daughter of volleyball player and coach Ioan Marius Țig began playing tennis at the age of eight and prefers the hard court for her game. She mainly competes on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour , on which she has so far won 14 tournaments in singles and four in doubles. Țig lives in Galați . She is trained by the former Romanian tennis player Răzvan Sabău , with whom she has a daughter, Sofia.

In 2009 she played her first ITF tournament in Romania, in 2012 she won her first two professional titles in her home country. At the tournament in Bucharest , Țig made her debut on the WTA Tour in 2014 after receiving a wildcard from the organizers for qualification; there she could only win one game against Indy de Vroome . Back on the ITF tour, she won her first title in a $ 25,000 tournament in Merida late that year . In 2015 she started for the first time in the qualification decisions at all four Grand Slam tournaments, winning one match each at the French Open and in New York . Again with a wild card, but this time equipped for the main draw, she won her first WTA match in Bucharest in 2015, benefiting from the task of Sílvia Soler Espinosas . Afterwards, Țig celebrated her greatest success up until then at the Baku Cup 2015 , surprisingly from qualifying to the final, defeating top seed Anastassja Pavlyuchenkova in two sets in the semifinals. In the final, she lost to Margarita Gasparjan in three sets with 3: 6, 7: 5 and 0: 6.

After she caused a sensation at the Premier Mandatory tournament in Madrid the following year when she surprisingly reached the quarter-finals from qualifying, Țig made it into the top 100 of the tennis world rankings for the first time . On her way to the round of the last eight, she beat Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys , two players from the top 30 in the world. At her premiere in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon , she lost to Sara Errani . Then she made it into a semi-final on the WTA Tour for the second time in Seoul and made it into the final at the big ITF tournament in Shenzhen , where she lost to Peng Shuai in three sets.

In 2017 Țig had another good result in Miami when she reached the third round as a qualifier and defeated a top 20 player for the first time with Kristina Mladenovic . Plagued by worsening health problems, she only got three more victories in the further course of the season. After an injury-related first round task at the WTA tournament in Guangzhou , she had to end the season early. In 2018, Țig took a break due to persistent complaints and the birth of her daughter Sofia in November.

The following year she returned to the ITF tour, where she won two tournaments after initial problems in a total of nine starts in Cancun. She started with a protected ranking at Wimbledon , but lost there against Paula Badosa Gibert at the beginning of the qualification . But right after her comeback on the WTA Tour at the BRD Bucharest Open 2019 , she reached her first WTA final in front of a home audience, having entered the tournament with a wildcard for qualification. On the way to the final, she eliminated the top seed Anastasija Sevastova in the second round ; there she had no chance against Jelena Rybakina . Two weeks later she celebrated her biggest title to date at the first edition of the WTA Challenger in Karlsruhe after winning the final in three sets over Alison Van Uytvanck .

Țig, who continues to struggle with back problems, returned to the top 100 in the world rankings in early 2020. After reaching the semi-finals in Hua Hin , she achieved her best world ranking position to date with 80th place.
