Sloane Stephens (born March 20, 1993 in Plantation , Florida ) is an American tennis player . Her greatest success so far was winning the 2017 title at the US Open and the subsequent triumph in the Fed Cup .
Career
Sloane Stephens, daughter of American football player John Stephens, began playing tennis at the age of nine. She was trained first by ex-tennis professionals Nick Saviano and Roger Smith , and later by former world-class player Paul Annacone . She is currently looking after Kamau Murray, with whom she worked successfully in 2016.
Junior career and first years on the WTA tour: 2007 to 2010
As a junior, Stephens won the renowned Trofeo Bonfiglio in 2009 , reached the semi-finals in the junior singles of the French Open and then achieved her highest position in the junior tennis world rankings with fifth place . In 2010 she triumphed at the side of Timea Babos in the junior doubles competitions of the French Open , the US Open and Wimbledon .
In 2007 she gained her first experience at smaller tournaments in Brazil on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour . She won her first ITF double title at the side of Christina McHale in 2008 in Wichita . In the same year she made her debut in the qualifying tournament of the US Open after she had received a wild card from the US Tennis Association and was defeated there in the second round. In the following years, Stephens had regular opportunities to compete in the qualifying tournaments of major American WTA tournaments. In 2010 she managed to move into the main draw for the first time in Indian Wells and her first win against Lucie Hradecká straight away before losing to Wera Swonarjewa in the second round .
Breakthrough to the top of the world: 2011 to 2013
In 2011 she won her first ITF title in a tournament in the $ 50,000 category in Reggio Emilia and then qualified for the first time at the French Open for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, but lost in the first round to Elena Baltacha . After reaching the quarter-finals at the WTA tournament in Carlsbad and the first foray into the third round of the US Open , in which she failed to Ana Ivanović , she was listed in the top 100 in the world for the first time at the end of the year and from then on received direct access to the Main fields of the Grand Slam tournaments. In 2012, Stephens played her first full season on the WTA tour. In addition to two semi-finals in Strasbourg and Washington , she achieved her best result to date at a Grand Slam tournament in Paris with the fourth round, followed by another third round participation in Wimbledon . She also made it into the third round in Cincinnati and at the US Open and wintered among the top 50 in the world for the first time.
At the beginning of 2013, Stephens had his final breakthrough on the WTA tour. After a quarter-final in Brisbane and a semi-final in Hobart , she stormed into the semi-finals of the Australian Open and prevailed against Serena Williams in the quarter-finals . In the semifinals she had to admit defeat to the eventual winner Wiktoryja Asaranka . She also impressed at the subsequent Grand Slam tournaments and reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon , where, with Marion Bartoli, also only lost to the later winner, and the fourth round at the French Open and US Open . In Cincinnati she moved into the round of 16 after defeating Marija Sharapova , as well as in Toronto and Beijing . Due to the consistently good performance in major tournaments, Stephens finished the season on position eleven in the world rankings.
Form fluctuations and injury problems: 2014 to 2016
The following year, Stephens came again in Melbourne and Paris in the round of 16 and in the quarter-finals of Indian Wells . Especially in the second half of the season, she struggled with her physical condition and fell back in the world rankings due to changeable results. After the early elimination in the second round of the US Open , she entered a smaller tournament in Guangzhou , where she lost at the beginning before she decided to end her season early due to persistent wrist problems. () Also the start of the 2015 season failed Stephens, who was only able to draw attention to herself again in Indian Wells when she reached the round of 16 and in Miami when she moved into the round of eight. She achieved her best results in Europe when she reached the fourth round at the French Open and advanced to the semi-finals in Eastbourne , where she beat a top 10 player again in the second round against Carla Suárez Navarro for the first time in almost two years. Back in America, she won her first title on the WTA tour in Washington after beating Anastassija Pavlyuchenkova in the final and stayed without losing a set during the entire tournament. At the final US Open , however, she already failed in the opening round and ended the year in 30th place without any further top results.
In 2016, Stephens, who has so far mainly shown at major events, was particularly successful at small tournaments. In Auckland she won her second WTA title at the start of the season with a victory over Julia Görges in the final, followed by her third in Acapulco after a final victory over Dominika Cibulková . Then she won in Charleston , where she was able to prevail in the final against Jelena Wesnina , a tournament in the premier category for the first time and came to the third round at the subsequent French Open and Wimbledon . After that, Stephens began to show signs of physical problems on the foot. Nevertheless, she still went to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where she was eliminated in the singles at the start against Eugenie Bouchard , before ending the year early. She then announced that she had been suffering from a foot injury for the entire season and that she had been advised to heal the injury for a long time. She was then diagnosed with a stress fracture in her left foot that put her out of action for nearly a year.
Comeback and first Grand Slam title: 2017 and 2018
It wasn't until Wimbledon 2017 that she returned to the WTA tour with a protected ranking , where she lost to Alison Riske in the first round . Although she had dropped to position 957 in the world rankings, she was able to reach the semifinals successively at both the Rogers Cup in Toronto and the semifinals in Cincinnati and thus climbed back into the top 100 of the tennis world rankings within two weeks. At the following US Open, after top 10 victories against Dominika Cibulková in the second round and Serena Williams in the semifinals, she advanced to her first Grand Slam final, in which she gave her compatriot Madison Keys no chance. With her first triumph in a major tournament, she stormed to 12th place in the ranking and thus qualified for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai. There she was eliminated after two defeats against Anastasija Sevastova and Barbora Strýcová already in the group stage. In the final of the Fed Cup against Belarus, Stephens lost in both individual games against Aryna Sabalenka and Aljaksandra Sasnowitsch . Due to two victories by Coco Vandeweghe and a subsequent success in the decisive doubles, the USA were able to decide the match for themselves. For the US team it was the 18th title ever and the first triumph since 2000. Because of her rapid rise in the world rankings, including her first Grand Slam triumph, the WTA named her returnee of the year 2017 .
After a first round at the Australian Open 2018 , Stephens made an impressive return with her first triumph at a tournament in the Premier Mandatory category in Miami and defeated three on the way to winning the tournament with Garbiñe Muguruza , Angelique Kerber and in the final with Jeļena Ostapenko Players from the top 10 in the world rankings. The following week Stephens himself was listed in the top 10 in the world for the first time. At the French Open she then reached her second Grand Slam final, in which, as in the final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal in preparation for the US Open, she had to admit defeat to world number one Simona Halep in three sets. For Stephens it was the first defeat in a final on the professional tour. Despite an opening defeat at Wimbledon , she achieved her best world ranking position so far in July with third place. In New York , she made it to the quarterfinals again as the defending champion, where she failed to Anastasija Sevastova, and thus qualified for the first time for the WTA Championships in Singapore in 2018 . There she booked three wins against Naomi Osaka , Angelique Kerber and Kiki Bertens in the group stage and beat Karolína Plíšková in three sets in the semifinals before losing to Elina Switolina in the final . Nevertheless, she was able to finish the year in sixth place in the top 10 in the world for the first time.
Since 2019
In 2019, Stephen's results became increasingly changeable. After a four-round participation in the Australian Open , she disappointed in the American hard court tournaments. Only on the clay court did she get back in shape and achieved her best result of the season in Madrid with the entry into the semi-finals, in which she failed to the eventual winner Kiki Bertens. At the French Open , she was once again in the quarter-finals, before she only reached the second round in Cincinnati and Wuhan twice in the second half of the season and slipped back to 25th place at the end of the year. After four defeats in a row at the start of the 2020 season, Stephens left the top 30 in the world rankings for the first time since 2017.
In 2012, Stephens made his debut in the 5-0 playoff success over Ukraine for the United States Fed Cup team . Since then she has played twelve games in singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win seven (individual balance 6: 4). In 2008 she won the Junior Fed Cup together with Kristie Ahn and Christina McHale . In the final, in which she herself did not get a chance, they beat the team from Great Britain 2-0.
Personal
Stephens is in a relationship with the American soccer player Jozy Altidore . The couple got engaged at the end of April 2019.
