Belinda Bencic (born March 10, 1997 in Flawil , resident in Uzwil ) is a Swiss tennis player .

family

Her grandfather Ivan Benčič played in the first team of the most successful Slovak ice hockey club, HC Slovan Bratislava . Her father Ivan Bencic came to Switzerland with his parents in 1968 when he was five years old from Czechoslovakia. He played ice hockey at EHC Uzwil , in Herisau, Chur, Ajoie, Geneva (both NLB) and one season with Olten in the NLA.

Bencic grew up with her younger brother Brian, who also plays tennis, in Oberuzwil , later the family moved to Wollerau .

She also has Slovak citizenship.

Career

In February 2012 Bencic played in Granges-Paccot against Australia for the first time in the Fed Cup for Switzerland . Your Fed Cup record so far: nine wins, three defeats. In September 2012 she won the ITF tournament in Sharm el-Sheikh in both singles and doubles, and a week later she won another singles title there.

On June 8, 2013, she won the French Open for Juniors with a final victory over Antonia Lottner (6: 1, 6: 3). Four weeks later she also won the title at Wimbledon , where she defeated Taylor Townsend in the junior women's final on July 6, 2013 4-6, 6-1 and 6-4. In December 2013 she was named ITF Junior World Champion .

2014 season

In 2014, Bencic qualified for the main draw of the Australian Open , where she eliminated the oldest player of the tournament, Kimiko Date-Krumm , in the first round , before losing to the eventual winner Li Na, who was seeded as number 4, in the second round . In April she surprisingly reached the semifinals at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston as a qualifier with a victory over number 3 seeded Sara Errani , which she lost to Jana Čepelová in three sets with 4: 6, 7: 5 and 6: 7. However, her good performance brought her to the top 100 in the world rankings . In Wimbledon she reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time with victories over Magdaléna Rybáriková and Victoria Duval , in which she was defeated by the later semi-finalist Simona Halep . At the US Open , after winning over Yanina Wickmayer , Kurumi Nara and the two top ten players Angelique Kerber and Jelena Janković, she was in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, which she beat Peng Shuai 2: 6 and 1: 6 lost. 2015 season

At the lawn tournament in Eastbourne she won her first WTA title in singles with a final victory over Agnieszka Radwańska . In Wimbledon she reached the round of 16, which she lost to Viktoria Azaranka in straight sets. At the WTA tournament in Toronto in August, Bencic defeated Serena Williams for the first time in the semi-finals and then won her second WTA title in singles with a final victory over Simona Halep.

2016 season

At the indoor tournament in St. Petersburg she reached the final, which she lost 4: 6 and 3: 6 to Roberta Vinci . When she reached the finals on February 15, 2016, she was ranked 9th in the top ten of the individual world rankings for the first time. A week later she was even listed in 7th position. 2018 season

In the first week of the calendar she won the Hopman Cup together with Roger Federer , after they had just missed the final in the previous year. At the Australian Open , Bencic beat last year's finalist Venus Williams 6: 3 and 7: 5 in the first round, but then lost in round two to qualifier Luksika Kumkhum . Season 2019

After she had won the Hopman Cup again together with Roger Federer , she was able to get her third title on the WTA Tour in Dubai .

Trainer

Bencic initially trained for six months at Nick Bollettieri's academy and received her tennis training from Melanie Molitor , the mother of Martina Hingis . She was then trained by her father until the end of 2016. If you believe media reports, he should have planned her career before she was born, but he denies that. Occasionally she continued to train with Melanie Molitor, for example right before her first victory at the Premier 5 tournament in Toronto in 2015. At the end of 2017, Bencic announced that her collaboration with Molitor was over. Marcel Niederer was Bencics investor and manager until the end of 2016 . At the beginning of 2017, Bencic was initially on the road without a coach. From February she worked briefly with Maciej Synowka. After an injury break, she signed Iain Hughes as the new coach.
