Taylor Townsend (born April 16, 1996 in Chicago ) is an American tennis player .

Career

At the age of six, Townsend began playing tennis as a right-hander, before switching after two years and from then on using her left hand as a punch hand.

The US-American is a former number one in the junior world rankings and won a total of four titles in the Grand Slam tournaments for juniors in 2012 , one in singles and three in doubles. At the Australian Open , she triumphed both in singles after a final victory over Julija Putinzewa , and then in doubles at the side of Gabrielle Faith Andrews . Together with Andrews, she also won the US Open and previously on the side of Eugenie Bouchard at Wimbledon . In 2013, she made it to the quarter-finals and the Wimbledon final at the French Open's junior singles competition , but lost both times to Belinda Bencic .

In 2011 she made her debut in New York with a wildcard in qualification, where she was eliminated in the second round. In 2013 she was allowed to start in the main draw of a WTA tournament in Washington for the first time , but had no chance there against Monica Niculescu . In 2012, as the world number one among the juniors, she surprisingly did not receive a wildcard for the main field of the US Open . As a consequence, she temporarily ended any collaboration with coaches from the US Tennis Association . In 2014 she won her first ITF titles in Charlottesville and Indian Harbor and made her debut in the main draw of the French Open as a recipient of a wild card in the third round, in which she had to admit defeat to Carla Suárez Navarro . In Washington, Townsend scored her first win on the WTA Tour from qualifying against Julia Görges , which was followed by reaching the second round at the Premier Mandatory tournament in Cincinnati . At the US Open , she reached the semi-finals together with Donald Young in mixed competition . In early 2015, Townsend was listed in the top 100 in the world for the first time after a win in Auckland , but she only managed five more wins by the end of the season, so that she finished the year outside the top 300.

In 2016 Townsend was able to fight her way up the ranking again after good results on the ITF tour, on which she won the tournament in Charlottesville for the second time and was also in the finals of Dothan and Indian Harbor. In addition, at the US Open at the side of Asia Muhammad came into the main field with a wildcard, for the first time in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament in doubles, which they lost against the eventual winners Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Šafářová . In 2017, after a success over Roberta Vinci as a qualifier , she reached the third round of Miami , in which she was eliminated first against Svetlana Kuznetsova . After three more titles on the ITF tour, including her biggest at the Waco $ 80,000 tournament to date , as well as participation in the second round in Cincinnati , also out of qualification, she was once again among the top 100 in the world rankings.

The following year, Townsend played almost exclusively in the United States. Only in the run-up to the Australian Open and Wimbledon did she leave America to play a preparatory tournament . With the exception of Melbourne, she survived the first round of all Grand Slam tournaments this year and also won three other titles on the ITF tour, which is why she achieved her best world ranking position to date with 61st place and was in the top for the season for the first time 100 in the ranking. In the following year, Townsend appeared despite their improved world rankings, apart from the Grand Slam tournaments, only once outside the USA, right at the start of the season in Auckland . Nevertheless, she finished the season again among the top 100 in the ranking and celebrated with the title at the $ 100,000 tournament in Charleston and the first-time entry into the round of 16 of a Grand Slam tournament at the US Open , where she and Simona Halep in the second round her first win against a player from the top 10, her greatest career success to date.

Together with her doubles partner Muhammad, she won her first WTA doubles title in Auckland in early 2020 and made it to the second round in singles for the first time at the Australian Open .

In 2015, she played her only game for the United States' Fed Cup team with a winning double in the 4-1 quarter-final win over Argentina . In 2017 she won the Junior Fed Cup together with Louisa Chirico and Gabrielle Andrews . In the final, they beat the team from Russia 3-0.
