Rebecca Peterson (born August 6, 1995 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish tennis player .
Career
Peterson, whose father and trainer Mart left the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1990 and moved to Sweden, began playing tennis at the age of five. From 2010 she played regularly on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour . Two years later she made her debut in Båstad in the main draw of a WTA tournament after receiving a wild card , but failed in the first round to Arantxa Rus . In 2013, Peterson won her first professional title and began a streak of 20 straight wins at the end of the same year, which included two tournament wins in the $ 25,000 category in Merida .
In 2014, Peterson received a wild card for the main round of the Premier Mandatory tournament in Miami and won there against Mona Barthel at the start , benefiting from the abandonment of the opponent before failing in the second round to Yekaterina Makarova . Also in Båstad she started again with a wildcard and was eliminated again in the first round, but towards the end of the season she won another title in the $ 25,000 category in Perth . In 2015 she first celebrated her first WTA double title alongside Ysaline Bonaventure in Rio de Janeiro . In the individual, she then reached the quarter-finals of a WTA tournament for the first time in front of a home crowd in Båstad and then took part in her first Grand Slam qualification at the US Open 2015 , in which she failed in the second round. At the end of the year she won her biggest title to date in a tournament in the $ 50,000 category in Macon, followed by another in Dothan in 2016 .
Due to an injury to his flapping arm, Peterson missed the first half of the 2017 season, but triumphed in Padua in her second tournament after comeback. At the subsequent US Open she succeeded for the first time qualifying for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, but lost in the first round against Denisa Allertová . After another quarter-final at the WTA tournament in Guangzhou and three semi-finals at ITF level as well as another at a tournament of the WTA Challenger Series in Honolulu , she was able to end the season in the top 200 of the tennis world rankings.
In 2018 she reached the semi-finals of a WTA tournament for the first time in Acapulco and then won her biggest title to date in an ITF tournament in the $ 100,000 category in Cagnes-sur-Mer . In Paris she then survived after a success over Hsieh Su-wei for the first time the opening round at a Grand Slam tournament, before losing smoothly to Mihaela Buzărnescu in the second round . At the US Open , she even made it into the third round, in which she failed to Kaia Kanepi . With victories in the main draw in Cincinnati and Wuhan , she was able to winter in the top 100 in the world for the first time at the end of the year.
In the second half of the 2019 season, Peterson showed her most consistent period to date. First, she was able to record her first win over a top 10 player in Washington against Sloane Stephens . She then advanced to the third round as a qualifier in Cincinnati and won her first two WTA titles in Nanchang , after beating Jelena Rybakina in the final , and in Tianjin , where she defeated Heather Watson in the final . At the end of the season, she achieved her highest world ranking position to date with position 43.
In 2014, Peterson made her debut for the Swedish Fed Cup team in the 4-0 playoff success over Thailand . Since then she has contested 19 matches in singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win nine (individual balance 5: 7).
