Arantxa Rus (born December 13, 1990 in Delft ) is a Dutch tennis player .

Career

Rus, who started playing tennis at the age of five, was an outstanding junior. In 2008 she won the junior competition at the Australian Open and, alongside her compatriot Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove, she won the doubles competition at the renowned Trofeo Bonfiglio and thus reached number one in the junior world rankings .

In 2007 she made her debut with a wildcard in the main draw of the WTA tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch and won her first two professional titles on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour . In 2008 she won her first two wins at tournaments in the $ 25,000 category in Bari and Opole and reached her first quarter-finals on the WTA Tour as a qualifier after victories over Yanina Wickmayer and Gisela Dulko in Guangzhou . In 2009 she went to the Australian Open for the first time in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament and lost in the second round. In Paris she made the jump into the main field, where she went straight to the second round after an opening win against Olivia Sanchez , in which she had to admit defeat to Jaroslawa Schwedowa . At the end of the season she won her biggest title to date in a tournament in the $ 50,000 category in Nantes and ended the year just outside the top 100 in the world.

After a weaker season in 2010, in which Russia initially fell back, she started the new season in 2011 with her first main field success in Melbourne over Bethanie Mattek-Sands . At the French Open she was in the third round for the first time after a surprising three-set win against Kim Clijsters , her first success against a top 10 player, but had no chance against Marija Kirilenko . After her final participation in the highly endowed ITF tournament in Cuneo and her first entry into the second round of the US Open , Rus was listed among the top 100 in the world for the first time. In the following year, she even improved her Grand Slam results and, after defeating Julia Görges at the French Open 2012, advanced to the first and so far only time in the round of 16 of a Grand Slam tournament, in which she failed against Kaia Kanepi . In Wimbledon , she celebrated her second win against a top 10 player against Samantha Stosur and moved into the third round for the first time before she was stopped by Peng Shuai . She then achieved her best position so far in the world rankings with position 61.

Subsequently, Rus suffered a form low and, based on their defeat in the second round of the WTA tournament in Dallas, they lost 15 games in a row across seasons before they survived the opening round at the ITF tournament in Cagnes-sur-Mer . She spent the second half of the season on the ITF tour, where she won five tournaments in the $ 25,000 category and finished the year in the top 200 in the world. At the beginning of the 2014 season, Rus again lost eight matches in a row and slipped further in the ranking. In 2015 she could only reach an ITF final in a tournament of the lowest category.

In the following year, Rus's performance stabilized again, but at no point was she able to meet the high expectations placed on her after her successful junior career. She won two tournaments in the $ 25,000 category on the ITF tour and qualified in Seoul after a three-year break in the main draw of a WTA tournament, where she lost to eventual winner Lara Arruabarrena at the start . In 2017 she won in Båstad , where she celebrated her first WTA tournament victory in doubles alongside her compatriot Quirine Lemoine , against Patricia Maria Țig again after five years in a single match in the main draw. At the end of the season she reached the final at a tournament of the WTA Challenger Series in Taipei , in which she had to admit defeat to Belinda Bencic . After Rus reached the quarter-finals after qualifying in Istanbul in 2018 , she was in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament at the French Open for the first time since Wimbledon in 2013 , after having moved up as a lucky loser; in the first round Sloane Stephens gave her no chance.

In 2019, Rus managed to return to the top 100 of the world rankings with ten ITF titles in the $ 25,000 category and a WTA quarter-finals in Palermo , thus qualifying for the main draw of the Australian Open 2020 . There she moved into the second round after an opening win against Magda Linette ; it was her first success in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament since Wimbledon 2012. Before the corona-related end of the season, she achieved her first semi-final on the WTA Tour in Monterrey , in which she was defeated by the eventual winner Elina Switolina .

In 2008 Rus was nominated for the first time for the Dutch Fed Cup team . Since then she has contested 32 singles and doubles for her country with interruptions, of which she was able to win 15 (individual balance 15:12).

In the German Bundesliga she played from 2006 to 2011 for the TC Blau-Weiss Bocholt and since 2015 for the TC Rot-Blau Regensburg , with which she became German champion in 2016.
