Équeurdreville-Hainneville is a commune Déléguée in the French city of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin with 16,615 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy .

Équeurdreville-Hainneville is located directly on the English Channel . Cherbourg-Octeville borders the former municipality to the east . In the south is Nouianville , in the southwest Flottemanville-Hague , in the west Tonneville and in the northwest Querqueville .

Toponymy

Équeurdreville-Hainneville is derived from the French ending -ville and from the Anglo-Scandinavian name Skelder (as far as Équeurdreville is concerned) and from the Germanic name Hagino (as far as Hainneville is concerned).

history

In 1055, the Notre-Dame d'Assomption church was built in Équeurdreville by the Bishop of Coutances, Geoffroy de Montbray. The church of Hainneville was also built in the 11th century. For the Second World War, the marine fort Équerdreville was built near Brécourt. In 1965, the formerly independent communities Équeurdreville and Hainneville were merged to form today's community.

The municipality of Équeurdreville-Hainneville merged with Cherbourg-Octeville , Tourlaville , La Glacerie and Querqueville to form the new municipality of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin on January 1, 2016 . Équeurdreville-Hainneville was the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of Équeurdreville-Hainneville until 2015 .
