The Munich Security Conference has been held annually in Munich since 1963 . Until 1991 it was organized under the name Münchner Wehrkundetagung or Münchner Wehrkundebegnung , in 1992 it was renamed the Munich Conference for Security Policy and since 2009 it has been called the Munich Security Conference . It has developed into an institution of international politics . Current issues in world politics are reflected in the topics discussed in lectures, on the podium and in accompanying discussions. Over time, the number of participants has expanded. Among the speakers and in the auditorium are always numerous heads of state and members of government, foreign and defense politicians, the military as well as high-ranking business representatives and representatives of civil society.

Chaired the conference

The conference did not take place in three years: in 1965, because the conference was held from the end of the year to the beginning of the year. In 1991 it was canceled at short notice due to safety concerns due to the Second Gulf War. In 1997 it did not take place after the announced departure from von Kleist-Schmenzin.
