Leonid Olexandrowytsch Koschara ( Ukrainian Леонід Олександрович Кожара ; Russian Леонид Александрович Кожара * 14. January 1963 in Poltava , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian diplomat and politician . From December 24, 2012 to February 23, 2014 he was Foreign Minister of Ukraine.

Professional background

Koschara first studied international law at the Taras Shevchenko University in Kiev . From 1985 to 1990 he studied international relations at the College of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine .

After Koschara initially worked in the presidential administration of Ukraine from 1992 to 1994 , he was secretary at the Ukrainian embassy in the USA from 1994 to 1997 , after which he held the position of deputy head of the department for foreign policy in the presidential administration. From 2002 to 2004 Koschara was the Ukrainian ambassador to Sweden . After his return from Sweden he resumed his previous role in the presidential administration.

Since 2006 Koshara was a member of the Verkhovna Rada and a member of the parliament's foreign policy commission. Since March 2010 he was one of the foreign policy advisors to President Viktor Yanukovych . When the Ukrainian government was reorganized after the parliamentary elections in 2012 , Koschara was appointed the country's new foreign minister on December 24, 2012, replacing Kostyantyn Hryschtschenko in this office .

His term of office ended on February 23, 2014 by parliamentary resolution, after President Yanukovych had been overthrown by the Euromaidan protests .

On March 25, 2020, Koschara was arrested on suspicion of murdering businessman Serhiy Staryzkyj.
