Pawlo Anatolijowytsch Klimkin ( Ukrainian Павло Анатолійович Клімкін , scientific transliteration Pavlo Anatolijovyč Klimkin ; born December 25, 1967 in Kursk , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is a Ukrainian diplomat and politician . From June 19, 2014, he was Foreign Minister of Ukraine in the second Yatsenyuk cabinet and in the Hroysman cabinet .

In connection with the inauguration of the new Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi , he resigned in May 2019.

Life

Klimkin studied at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology , majoring in aerophysics and space research, and graduated in 1991 with a diploma in physics and applied mathematics. As a result, he worked as a research assistant at the Paton Institute for Electrofusion at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine until 1993 .

Klimkin began his diplomatic career from 1993 to 1996 in the arms control and disarmament department of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1997 to 2000 he was the secretary of the Ambassador of Ukraine in Germany with scientific, technical and political issues.

After further activities at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kiev , where he had been involved with nuclear energy security and European integration since 2000, Klimkin moved to the Ukrainian Embassy in the UK as Counselor and Deputy Ambassador in 2004 .

He then headed the EU department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. From April 2011 to June 2012 he was Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine. From June 2012 he was Ukraine's ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany until he became his country's new foreign minister on June 19, 2014.

Shortly before the inauguration of the new Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj , Klimkin submitted his resignation on May 17, 2019. The vote submitted by Zelenskyi on the resignation in parliament on June 6, however, did not find the required majority. On June 11, Zelenskyi submitted a new attempt, this time with the resolution to appoint Vadym Prystajko as the new foreign minister.

Klimkin is married and has two sons.
