Hennadij Jossypowytsch Udovenko ( Ukrainian Геннадій Йосипович Удовенко ., Scientific transliteration Hennadij Josypovyč Udovenko , is distributed internationally, the English transcription Hennadiy Udovenko * 22. June 1931 in Krivoi Rog , Ukrainian SSR ; † 12. February 2013 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian Politician and diplomat.

Udovenko was Foreign Minister of Ukraine from 1994 to 1998 and President of the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1997/98 .

Life

Hennadij Udovenko studied at the Faculty of International Relations at the University of Kiev until 1954 , but was appointed Secretary of the Minister for the Building Materials Industry of the USSR as early as 1952 because of his exceptionally good performance. 1959 began his career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, which had its own membership in international organizations, similar to Belarus , although part of the USSR, since 1945. From 1965 to 1971 and 1977 to 1980 he worked at the United Nations in Geneva and New York. From 1980 to 1985 Udovenko was Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister, then permanent representative of his homeland to the United Nations, and in 1985 he chaired the UN Security Council as representative of Ukraine for one month. In 1991 he was Vice President of the 46th UN General Assembly. From 1992 to 1994 Udowenko represented Ukraine as ambassador to Poland .

Udovenko was a well-known representative of the Ruch party, in the final phase of the USSR the union of dissidents and advocates of the independence of Ukraine, he headed the part of the party after the split in the Ruch, after the mysterious death of its chairman Vyacheslav Chornovil in 1999 President Leonid Kuchma was close and supported them in the 1999 runoff election. Under Kuchma, Udovenko headed the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry from August 25, 1994 to April 17, 1998.

Towards the end of his time as Foreign Minister, the UN General Assembly elected him President on September 16, 1997. By the end of that term on September 9, 1998, he chaired the 52nd regular, the resumption of the 10th emergency session and the 20th special session.

Since 1998 he has been a member of the Ukrainian Parliament and chaired the Committee on Human Rights and National Minorities; he belonged to the new "party of power" around President Viktor Yushchenko .

Udovenko was married and has a daughter. He died in Kiev and was buried there in the Baikowe cemetery .
