Herbert Vere Evatt
Herbert Vere Evatt (born April 30, 1894 in East Maitland , † November 2, 1965 in Canberra ) was an Australian politician, diplomat and author. He has served as both his country's justice and foreign ministers, chairman of the Australian Labor Party and president of the UN General Assembly .
Life
Evatt studied English, mathematics and philosophy at the University of Sydney . In 1918 he was admitted to the bar and in 1924 he received his doctorate in law in Sydney. At about the same time he joined the Labor Party and was elected to the parliament of the province of New South Wales in 1925. In 1930 he was appointed to the High Court of Australia as the youngest member to date .
In 1940 he left this to become a member of the Australian Parliament. In 1941 he became Justice and Foreign Secretary in the Labor administration of John Curtin .
As such, he took part in the San Francisco Conference in 1945 , where he signed the United Nations Charter for Australia. In 1946 he headed the Australian delegation to the Paris Peace Conference. In 1946 Evatt took over the post of Deputy Prime Minister in addition to his ministerial offices.
From 1946 to 1948 he was head of the Australian delegations to the UN , in the third session in 1948 he was President of the UN General Assembly . He also headed the UN Atomic Energy Commission and the Palestinian Conference.
After the end of the Labor government in 1949, he remained deputy laboratory chairman and, after Ben Chifley's death, took over the party chairmanship and the role of opposition leader, which he remained until 1960.
Honors
In 1950 Evatt was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
The suburb of Evatt in the Australian capital Canberra and the Evatt Foundation , a political science institute closely related to the Australian Labor Party , are named after Evatt .
