Marise Payne (born July 29, 1964 in Sydney ) is an Australian politician with the Liberal Party of Australia and since August 28, 2018 Foreign Minister in Scott Morrison's cabinet .

Life

After graduating from high school, Marise Payne studied at the University of New South Wales and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Laws . After working as a consultant for various liberal politicians, she worked in the financial sector as a public affairs advisor.

Since 1982 she has been a member of the Liberal Party of Australia, whose youth organization Young Liberal Movement of Australia she headed from 1987 to 1988 in New South Wales. From 1989 to 1991 she was President of the Youth Organization for All Australia. In April 1997 she moved to the Australian Senate for the state of New South Wales . She defended her mandate in the Senate elections in 2001, 2007, 2013 and 2016.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott appointed her to his cabinet as Minister for Human Services in September 2013 . Under Abbott's successor Malcolm Turnbull, she became Australia's first female Secretary of Defense in 2015. She will continue to hold this office in Turnbull's second cabinet after the elections in July 2016. Following the election of Scott Morrison as Australian Prime Minister on August 24, 2018, Payne remained in office as Secretary of Defense until August 28 and then moved to the post of Secretary of State, where she succeeded Julie Bishop , who had announced her resignation two days earlier. Her successor as Secretary of Defense was Christopher Pyne .

Private

Payne is in a relationship with the 16 years younger politician Stuart Ayres , Minister of Commerce of the State of New South Wales, and lives in Mulgoa , Penrith City .
